I got my hopes up a couple of years or so ago when EHX came out with the news of the release of the Crying Tone Pedal. When I read that I was really looking forward to buying one, however that was short lived when I saw it.Back in the early ’70s I bought one of the first oibleriginal Crying tone pedals made-it was just incredible with 4 different wah wah voices,a reverse wah function and the ability to use it as a volume pedal. The original was a huge pedal and was as sturdy as a Sherman tank but its most redeeming feature was its amazing tonal possibilities. That wah wah could create the much in demand “vomit” sound of the early Jen Cry Babies or the great weeping tones that Jimi Hendrix got from his Vox Clyde McCoy wah wah.The other 2 wah wah settings gave you varying degrees of a bassy growl like those that were popular in the funk and soul bands at the time.I traded my Crying Tone and a set of practice headphones for a rare Vox Phantom XII guitar-a trade I’d be a fool to pass up-but I really missed it right away anyway.
I’d really like to see EHX reissue the original Crying Tone pedal,it was probably the most versatile and innovative wah wah pedals ever made and most likely the most indestructible.I believe that if Mike Matthews gave the go ahead for resurrecting that great pedal, they’d be an immediate hit.
