ok ive owned and love the tube Black Finger for about a year now. i love the tone it gives me and the compression is great, but….compressors usualy give sustain as well, but im not hearing any difference or improved quality in the sustain area.
is this normal for a black finger? or have i not tuned in the correct settings yet?
i own about 20 EHX pedals new and old, and every one i dont have are all on my wish list, i try to buy whatever i can get my hands on for a decent price. but i am seriously considering putting a Soul Preacher on the top of that list to correct my situation.
so my second question would be, i love my black finger, if i did get the soul preacher, can i use them together? or would that become a problem? i would plan on using the black finger more for compression, and setting the preacher to focus on the sustain. would this work or should i only use one or the other, or maybe use both on separate signal paths using a switchblade to switch what one im using.
December 29, 2009 at 9:33 pm #105822Mr.GrimMemberi would have mentioned the White Finger as an option, but it just seems to me to be exactly the same as my Black finger , except its not tube (valve) based.
and the preacher would be cheaper, and fit better in my “2” pedalboards, there very crowded as is.
January 5, 2010 at 3:40 pm #106080BobbyGinAZParticipantHey Mr Grim. I have the same problem. No actual sustain and on top of that I notice that the tubes don’t seem to actually lite up. There is a very bright white lite under the cover close to the tubes that I can see the the cathode tubes don’t seem to glow or get warm at all.
I don’t think this is correct and unless i missed my guess on this one, the tubes are looking like window dressing in a storefront. Look nice, do nothing.
Perhaps that’s why no sustain? back in 1971 that Electro-Harmonix ads used to brag up the Black Finger as producing the Jimi Hendrix quality sustain. I don’t think so.
January 5, 2010 at 5:17 pm #106083Mr.GrimMemberi believe my unit works correctly, just that im looking for it to do more than it should, it definitely compresses properly and adds nice tone, just not much sustain if any at all.
my tubes do glow, yours seem to be defective.
January 5, 2010 at 6:06 pm #106095BobbyGinAZParticipantYepper, I do believe you are correct about it being defective. Them tubes have no light in them at all. I wrote the Folks at the Head Shed who make the stuff and they said “send it in”.
Great. Just came to me yesterday, and I’m sending it out already to get fixed. This does not look well for the Quality Control Dept. Know what I mean Mr Grim?
Thanks for the feedback. Glad yours works. This thing is NOTHING like it says in the ads. Than again, not really much is anymore..

January 6, 2010 at 1:40 am #106110Mr.GrimMemberdont give up all faith in there quality control, i know they test every single unit that ships out from them, not every 5th or every other, but every single unit gets plugged in and played for a moment. :rawk:
but i can understand your frustration, still, go ahead and send it in , they are real good at fixing the few problems that do arise, and you will have it back fairly soon.
it being a tube unit, they are more fragile, so it may have been the shipping and handling during distribution or a warehouse that may have knocked sum thing wrong with the unit. :freak:
i myself have been fortunet to have all new units of there’s work fine for me, i just had a couple problems with a couple vintage units that seem like i saved from an abusive home (lol) to be a bit faulty from ruff situations, or old age. 😥
but with my own know how, i have been able to recuperate them to full working order. in a couple situations, i was at a loss as what to do, but we have many good friends here within these forums that share the same passion, and are all ways helpful when in need.

As to blackfinger sustaining I don’t seem to have any problem. I use it on a solo in a song we play and I have my amp on the drive setting and the BF on lamp in the normal mode with the pre amp setting at about 3 oclock and the post setting about 12 oclock and there is loads of sweet feedback sustain. In fact a really big sound. This I found also in a clean mode as well. I think you have to just experiment with it, -
