the power supplies that come with the microsynth, stereo memory man and cathedral (9.6 200ma) are all causing humming issues for me. if i plug the power supplies into a power strip on my pedal board, it always causes a low, but audible hum. if i plug in an extension cord from the power strip in order to move the power supplies away (a good three feet) the humming disappears. also the hum is present regardless of if the power supply is actually connected to a pedal or not (so it is not a ground loop problem).
1. first off, what is causing this issue? (as my one-spot and power supply that came with a strymon pedal don’t do this – despite the fact that they are plugged in to the same power strip at the same proximity that is causing the problems when the ehx power supplies are plugged in)
2. any silent solutions out there for adequately powering these pedals? (as i know ehx is very adamant that you use their included power supply for each of these pedals)
thanks in advance!
February 23, 2011 at 10:12 pm #114459dibletMemberanother question i suppose would be would the following pedals work chained together with a onespot (since i know the one spot works for my situation, i could just purchase another and be done with it):
microsynth (newer 9v version, ??mA)
stereo memory man w/h (170 mA)
cathedral (163mA)i know the manual says not to daisy-chain these pedals… but if a supply has 1700mA to supply what is the harm chaining three pedals that pull under 600mA?
February 27, 2011 at 2:43 pm #114498dibletMemberthe stereo memory man does not like to be chained … i undid my pedalboard to use my onespot to try to power the smmwh, but there is a high pitch whine…
so i guess my question still stands:
anyone know of any power supply that can be put in close proximity to your pedals (on the pedalboard) for powering the microsynth, cathedral and stereo memory man w/h and does not induce noise into the signal chain the way the stock ehx power supply does?
March 22, 2011 at 6:42 pm #114842dibletMemberdoes nobody have any quiet alternative for powering the smmw/h, cathedral and microsynth xo ? – or does everyone use the stock power supplies?
sadly, i still have not found a solution here…
still getting that humming from the stock ehx power supplies unless i run an extension cord to keep the power supplies a good three feet away from the board. it is okay (but a bit messy) for home use, but not a very good solution for a portable pedal board / playing live…
March 22, 2011 at 7:13 pm #114843CryabetesParticipantI know this sounds crazy, but have you tried wrapping the PS’s in aluminum foil?
that and making sure the power cable to the pedal isn’t in a coil will probably go a long way towards alleviating noise.otherwise, separate onespots would probably work.
March 22, 2011 at 10:32 pm #114839dibletMemberhaha, not completely crazy – i did try the foil, but it didn’t seem to do the trick… and it doesn’t seem to matter how the actual cabling is coiled or not…
i think you are right, it is looking more and more like i have to grab a couple onespots…
April 2, 2011 at 5:05 am #114869whiteboy_slimMemberI brought my Blackfinger and Hum Debugger from the studio into the house to play around. The Blackfinger developed an annoying buzz. After reading this forum, I took the Blackfinger power supply off the power strip and plugged it into another outlet and the buzz disappeared. Thanks to you guys for solving my problem.
I realized that the reason I don’t usually have this problem is that I don’t use an ordinary power bar on stage. I have a surge protector that, instead of a power-strip, has six power cords of various lengths. I have no idea where I got it, but it might work for you,

Well not really the same just wondering if I could use the One Spot to power both pedals along with a Seiko tuner and the Hardwire Chorus, all daisy chained. The manual warns to only use the power adapter supplied for both Graphic Fuzz and Ring Thing (each came with their own adapter). Just looking to have less wires and more room on power strip.
