Groovy little box for sure, you can get some really gnarly flanging sounds out of this thing (that’s good, I guess). The chorus didn’t impress me much. I already have a Small Clone so I just use that instead, but if you don’t already have a chorus, it will suffice. Maybe the chorus section could have been omitted completely, in leu of a color knob for the flange ( it is a mistress after all). Pretty sure this thing is digital, last I heard (correct me if I’m wrong) so it’s not quite as warm as I like my effects, that’s why I’m probably going to sell it and upgrade to the Deluxe Mistress. All in all, good pedal, good value. You’re getting two effects in one (something I’m not really crazy about, but that’s just me) for about 15 bucks less than a Deluxe EM (About $120, so if you can spare 15 more bones, you should spring for the DLX, I don’t know why I didn’t.)
January 13, 2009 at 8:35 am #90604electro-melxModeratorI pretty much agree, although if size is an issue I can see why the SEM might be attractive for some people…..I had one (but sold it) I’m just not a flanger person I guess…..the only thing I really liked was the ‘frozen flanger’ type sounds.
I also have the Flanger/Chorus on the Hazarai if I really feel the need to use one or the other, but that doesn’t happen very often!

January 20, 2009 at 4:00 pm #91250dsl1MemberI have both the Stereo & Deluxe Versions & I think they’re both
great but different. At first I didn’t like the Stereo (yes- it’s digital) until I used
it direct for stereo recording. The stereo is very cool & useful.
There are sounds in there that I’ve never heard before :love:February 10, 2009 at 7:31 pm #93038liveatsixMemberThe SEM is looking like my next purchase. Does it have a lot of noise to it like most chorus effects? For example, I tried out a Clone Theory that was very noisy.
February 10, 2009 at 7:51 pm #93039julianModeratorClone Theory = analog thus it is noisy because it is tuned brightly thus the noise made by the BBD chip is audible (most analog stuff uses a low pass filter to get rid of it, at the cause of the brightness of the effect)
SEM = digital therefor there should be no noiseFebruary 11, 2009 at 12:05 am #93047electro-melxModeratorI had a SEM and noticed no noise at all. :thumb:
February 11, 2009 at 6:09 am #93072liveatsixMemberThanks for the info. I was dragging my heels a bit wondering about the noise question. Much appreciated!
February 11, 2009 at 10:19 pm #93128janusEffectModeratorThe SEM is virtually dead silent. It’s the quietest pedal I’ve ever come across, and I’ve used a lot of pedals.
It’s the most frequently used pedal on my board, and although I’m not too picky about white noise (I used to own a Clone Theory), I can certainly appreciate the purity of the SEM’s effects.
Funny that the review finds it to be not very warm. I think the opposite, and I love the chorus effect on it. It’s almost a polar opposite of the cold and bright (yet lush) Clone Theory, and that’s an analog pedal!

Best Chorus = Small Stone

Do you mean Clone?

I agree.
February 21, 2009 at 5:42 am #93750liveatsixMemberI got me one of these this morning and it is just awesome. It’s like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain, it’s so good. I’ve always been in the “flanger and chorus are almost the same so why not have them in the same pedal?” camp for the longest time. This makes me very happy.
February 21, 2009 at 10:40 am #93759nightravenMemberi don’t like it very much. the deluxe electric mistress sounds infinitely more awesome and you can still dial in a chorus tone with it even though it doesn’t say so on the box. good review though.
