So I have a early 80’s MMD (I can’t be sure) and it’s usually in storage in a closet. I got it in the mid 90’s and I don’t believe it’s ever been modded or anything.
Took it out today and pluged it in to just a practice amp and my guitar. (same setup I always use) Turned on the amp, strummed and no sound….hmmm.. power lights are on, turned amp volume and gain up, heard the amp hum since it was pretty high and all of a sudden I notice a smell of something burning. NOOOO!! unplugged everything, and I brought it to the bathroom (better light), grabbed a screwdriver and took off the bottom.
As soon as I did, the was a waft of visable smoke that came out right near the little foam padding on the inside of the back plate. I looked around and couldn’t see anything else burned or capacitors bulging/leaking. The circuit board soder connect points are kinda dark in alot of spots, but they’ve always looked that way as far as I can remember.
Anyway, I carefully removed the power switch screws because there is BARELY enough wire length to move the circuit board around. I found where the 2 wires that connect to the “overload” led, the white one has broken off. I’m not 100% positive this happened when I took it apart or not, or that if this one could have heated up, broken off and caused that foam pad to scorch since it touches the bare metal…. I can’t honestly tell if the broken wire is burned or just snapped off.
What do you guys think? I’m not an electrician and I don’t trust myself attempting to repair this. Do you think an authorized shop could do this? I love this thing and don’t want to try to find and pay for another vintage one.
All the other capacitors and other stuff on the brown side look ok to me. I can’t see anything else burnt or what.
Thanks forum for any advice!
