i’ve not used either… either, but a lot of people like the CE-2. just as a lot of people like some other Boss chorus pedals… and pedals from other brands…
and there are also lots of people that don’t like the Small Clone or Polychorus.for us guitarists/effects-users it’s just great that there are so many choices out there.
I don’t like the nano clone, it made me sad.

I have not used either unfortunately, but I have some good sound samples from Flaser-Phanger’s web site and did a “blind test” while listening to them. My favourite sounded very warm and had that deep swirl- and that turned out to be the CE-1.
The CE-2 was close, but it was a bit more brighter, and so the chorusing was not as thick, well not as thick as I like it to be. Others like the CE-3 and CE-5 sounded a bit brittle.
I’ve tried the newer CE-5 (which is digital, not analogue) and it sounded quite brittle to me. The CH-1 was ok but not what I expected. I guess if I fiddled with it more I would like it, but my H2O trumps all of Boss’ chorus pedals, apart from the Mother CE-1.
I think the CE-20 is a great idea, and I guess with more fiddling it would be good too. But I don’t like that it uses COSM modelling rather than an analogue BBD circuit with just tone filters & adjusters to replicate the different Boss Chorus pedals.Yes. the CE-2 is meant to be the CE-1 in a compact form, but truly there is something different about it that I wish was not so.
And yes, I am one of those that isn’t so crazy about the Small Clone. I heard a demo yesterday that was the first I thought was good.

Or the DS-2 because Frusciante uses it.Even Boss’ pedals tuner has been bested by korg, because the pitchblack has true bybass, unlike the boss. The DS-2 seems pretty cool, by I just use my amp for distortion or overdrive. The only gain based pedals that I buy are Fuzz, that’s where the Big Muff come in. Have you seen Boss’ fuzz? That thing looks like a joke!
I’ve seen the boss fuzz pedal. I never tried it out though because the big muff pi is just going to be better so i never bothered.

…..and sometimes something that sounds ‘bad’ can be used very effectivly in a song…..I know people who have tried to get a ‘crass’ type fuzz sound from the early recordings, it’s impossible with a half decent amp/guitar and any pedal by any brand…as far as anyone knows it’s just a really cheap horrible guitar with awful single coil pickups ran into a crappy cheapo SS practice amp with everything turned up full…yeah it sounds ‘bad’ but in the context of that band it works really well imo.
January 16, 2009 at 7:11 pm #90924julianModeratorMy friend’s punk band in high school’s sound was mainly dependent on his awful guitars that could never stay in tune and a Peavey solid state half stack that had a thrash mode on it that which sounded broken. I miss that amp, and seriously wish he never sold it. It just sounded like total crap, in a really, really good way.

‘thrash mode’ sounds awesome!!
blimey, small clone review thread takes a sudden dive somewhere totally different!!!
January 16, 2009 at 8:15 pm #90938BlueSteelParticipantThis thread got way off topic.
January 16, 2009 at 8:25 pm #90940electro-melxModeratorQuote:This thread got way off topic.true, but it’s fine…conversation is good, it’s what the forum is here for….it’s still vaguely about the small clone and how other chorus pedals compare anyway….
…and the review is still there in the first post, that’s all that matters really, it’s not one thread per pedal. Everyone is welcome to start their own review thread as far as I’m concerned, either for all the pedals they own or an individual one they feel passionate about one way or another.
’tis all good.
January 16, 2009 at 8:39 pm #90943BlueSteelParticipantWhile everyone is talking about fuzz, what does everyone think of the Z.VEX Fuzz Probe? I’ve seen a lot demos of this on youtube and it seems pretty cool. It’s sort of expensive but i’d get it.
January 16, 2009 at 8:57 pm #90948julianModeratorI wanted one for awhile, but could never justify the price.

January 16, 2009 at 10:34 pm #90959julianModeratorI understand that it costs him more to make his pedals than EHX.
But I think the premium price for the hand painted enclosures thing is stupid.

me too, I don’t even really like the handpainted look, it just reminds me of badly painted plates and mugs at craft fairs.
nah, gimme a nice sharp print any day.
