Has Electro Harmoniix got a plan to fit pedals with silent or not so noisy foot switches? And is there a method of reducing the noise factor (mechanical noise factor) on the EHX pedals already released? This was never an issue for me until playing live with modern dance and theatre where there are often silent or quiet moments and mechanical foot switch noise is best avoided.

Do you know there’s people that won’t even consider buying a pedal that hasn’t got one of those stupid clunky blue footswitches in them? I rather have soft electrical switching anyday if i’m honest.

October 30, 2009 at 8:36 pm #103016B.DawsParticipantMost of my EHX/true bypass pedals don’t click other than the “pop” of the switch. I hate Boss pedals (though I do mod many of them for people) because I just do. But to Watson’s question, something funny is I have 3 Behringer pedals (the Vintage Phaser, the Vintage Time Machine {DMM Clone}, and the VT999) and all of them are true bypass and make no noise at all! The switches look just like the ones on all my EHX and true bypass pedals. I took the pedals apart and the foot switch sits on a pcb of some kind and it’s a very strange looking switch. Though it doesn’t have the “pop” feel of the pedals it works and is completely silent.
October 30, 2009 at 9:06 pm #103019BlueSteelParticipanti don’t really mind the noise.
October 30, 2009 at 9:07 pm #103021Ned FlandersModeratorNone of my pedals pop and if they did I’d solder a 4M7 resistor from input to ground to get rid of it.
October 30, 2009 at 9:22 pm #103027WatsonWoodMemberTrue. I am mainly concerned with the mechanical noise.
November 12, 2009 at 1:03 am #103675subsquareMemberHello from a new member,
I was looking for a thread such as this cos i also have the popping/clicking that seems prevalent with the EHX pedals.
I have the memory toy and worm and both pop. Does anyone think that it’s something that’ll be more pronounced when new and will wear off in time and use?
Putting them through my Carvin Legacy’s effects send sounds great but made me wince when I switched the pedals on and off.
If necessary then I’ll take the administrators advice of soldering a resistor in, but, to be honest I wasn’t expecting to do DIY on such pricey pedals! If it doesn’t harm the sound then why don’t EHX solder it in as standard?
So will it ‘soften’ in time? Anybody?
cheers
Martyn
November 12, 2009 at 2:10 am #103678korgiMemberyeah….loads of really good pedals i have owned have noisy switches….and to be honest, it sort of annoys me, cos i have (for example) a carbon copy, which is true bypass an all that, it has the same style of switch (so you get the satisfiying ‘click/pop’ whatever) but its just much, much softer and smoother and quieter
in fact it just feels better quality…..which i think is the really issue….just better parts.i really wish ehx would upgrad their switches a little, cos their effects pedals are brilliant.
blah

November 12, 2009 at 5:25 am #103684WatsonWoodMemberdevnulljp, please tell more about the lovepedal switches. This thread is about silent foot switches, and “pops” are annoying, however it is above all about mechanical noise from EHX foot switches.
So, what about lovepedal?November 12, 2009 at 7:51 am #103685devnulljpParticipantNot much to tell really. I don’t like his stuff much, but he uses these soft touch switches I haven’t seen anywhere else. They don’t really click (as in physically) when you stomp on them — the feel is a bit more like a momentary switch rather than stomp-CLUNK, but it is an on/off switch (I don’t know how it works). As I remember, there was some action to it, but way less than a standard switch.
