Hello,
I have a Mesa Boogie Mark IV and I want to lower the overall output volume without degrading the tone of the amp. So that I can play in my appartment without having the master volume knob between 0 and 1.
Would the Signal Pad be suitable for this? I plan to insert it in the FX loop chain. Provided the Signal Pad is designed for hi impedance use, isn’t it going to alter the tone?
Thanks for your help
Robin
Haven’t tried it myself, but I’m pretty sure it affects the tone, because it basically lowers the signal volume before the signal goes to the power amp – a feature that’s already built in every amp: Volume… The only way you can get a powerful tube amp sound good at low volume is placing an attenuator between the amp and the speaker/s. As far as I know…
It won’t break anything if you test, though. If it works, let me know
Yep I saw products like the one you refer to (http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/product_info.php?products_id=385) I was looking for a cheaper solution.
Are you sure that it will alter the tone badly?
It’ll be the same as turning down your amp’s volume. you won’t have the same sound saturation to your preamp with the signal pad.
That’s what I expected. The problem is that I cannot turn the volume any lower, it is already at 0.2
What about the impedance of the Signal Pad? Is it going to work on the FX loop of a tube amp?
it should. you might want to consider a clean compressor for that instead though, like maybe the Black Finger or a studio rack compressor.
