Hi everyone. I’ve had a little big muff pi for a few months and have been dabbling with it, however I can’t seem to set it up correctly to get the sound I see and hear in all of the demos available online. I’m running it through a Fender FrontMan 65R amp with a standard Fender Strat, and I usually loop the pedal solo or with my Vox Wah. Whenever I turn the LBM on though, so much tone and volume is sucked from the entire setup that with every knob on the amp, pedal, and guitar turned up to 11 I can still barely hear anything. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for an inexperienced Muff user?
LBM has LOTS of volume
if you’re playing with others on some settings there aren’t a whole lot of mids, so it could get lost in the mix, but you can adjust the tone knob and turn down the sustain a bit and get back in the mix
I’d second that. Both the wah and LBM should be plugged into before plugging into the amp. The fx loop on the 65R isn’t great to begin with, but if I were forced to use it I might put a delay or reverb in the loop, not the wah and definitely not distortion.
Distortion pedals aren’t designed to go in the FX loop – they are designed to take a dry guitar signal, crunch it up into the distorted sound, so the amp’s preamp stage can round off the edges and make it sound like a distorted guitar.
It’ll be difficult to get a sound like the EHX demo because it sounds to me like they are using a very expensive british voiced tube amp (65amps soho???) with a slight bit of natural overdrive which is adding to the sound of the pedal somewhat, but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t get a good sound – as julian said, if you’re struggling to get any definition amongst all the fuzz, roll back the sustain knob a little – it can work wonders, i have mine at 8 o’clock (Very low) on my NYC muff. Although i’m sure you’ll notice you’re much closer to the sound you hear on online demos by simply having the pedal in front of the amp
Thanks for the help everyone. I reconfigured my FX loop and took the LBM out, placing it right in front of the amp. It sounds much better, due to your suggestions. Thanks again
The only thing I used to put in the loop of a SS amp I have was a passive attenuator because it was too loud and I couldn’t adjust it quiet enough. The LBM is louder than the NYC so you shouldn’t have any problems if you run it direct into the amp.
I’m new to working with effects loops and pedalboards and everything. If I was to construct my own pedalboard, which I plan on doing, should I just run it straight through the front of the amp? Its a simple detail I overlooked for some reason
