Came in the mail today. Gonna go give it a whirl. I post a review later. I’ll compare it with the NYC and Tone Wicker.
Got a russian Muff today. I got the other 4 pedals today too. The ’70, I bought on Tuesday.
December 26, 2008 at 9:14 pm #89661julianModeratorMy personal preference with Muffs I’ve tried goes like this:
Green Russian
Little Big Muff
Black Russian
NYC Big MuffDecember 26, 2008 at 9:45 pm #89665Ned FlandersModeratorI love the little enclosures the current russian muff is in, its kinda like the triangle muff size.
December 26, 2008 at 9:56 pm #89666MINGMemberI’m really liking it so far. I think it leans more towards a fuzzy distortion. Nice and thick. Kind of like fudge.
I haven’t searched yet. I got the Russian in a trade. My intentions are to mod it.
Ned, do you have or know where I can read up on some mods for this thing?
My fav Muffs probably go like this.
My girl’s
Tone Wicker
Ram’s Head – Only played it for about an hour.
NYC RI
Black RussianI’m dying to try a Deluxe Muff
December 26, 2008 at 10:00 pm #89672Ned FlandersModeratorI have some mods I put together for this muff that will make it sound even better, it will have a sound cross between the NYC muff and the green sovtek muff, I’ll PM it to you. It will only cost you a couple of dollars to do too.

January 15, 2009 at 4:45 am #90765CostchParticipantI’m looking to get another muff (it seems as if I’m looking to get a new everything these days, when will I be satisfied?) and my choices are as follows (I play normal 6 string guitar by the way):
Russian Big Muff
Double Muff
Bass Big Muff (I heard that this thing is modeled somewhat after the Green Russian, which I really love the sound of)
Perhaps a used Green Russian if I can find one for a reasonable price, most seem to go for around $200)Any suggestions? I’m thinking either the black USSR or double, just because they’re pretty cheap.
Also, you bought five pedals in one day?! I wish I had that kind of money.
January 15, 2009 at 4:52 am #90767julianModeratorWell the double muff is a completely different monster than a big muff, totally different circuit.
I think the Bass Big Muff takes inspiration from the Russian and the Green. I like it a lot. Also having three modes is really nice because you can get a lot of different sounds out of it. The Bass Big Muff stacks very nicely with other dirt pedals because it has that clean blend. Personally I’ve played both the black and green, and I like them both (especially the green) but I’d go with the Bass Big Muff- it is much cheaper than green muff, sounds great, and is very flexible.

Cool, thanks man. If only Guitar Center (the only place within a reasonable distance from my house that has a somewhat decent selection of effects) would ever have one in stock, I could try it out through a 25w solid state combo and a greasy Gibson that hundreds of young children have felt up.

The Russian, Bass, and Double Muff are all fairly inexpensive. Since they are inexpensive, I would have no problem ordering them cold.
Out of those three, I would go with the Double Muff. Setting 1, you have the Muff OD. Setting 2, it goes from Od/Dist –> fuzzy OD/Dist. I think that it is the most versatile one there. The cheapest too.
The black Sovtek can easily be modded to green Sovtek specs. From what I’ve read, it seems that the black’s components and craftsmen ship are superior to the green’s. So unless, its the aesthetics that you want, go with the black one.

I’m not really good with circuits or anything, so I might mess something up. And I could always just spray paint the box Olive Drab.
January 16, 2009 at 12:02 am #90845Ned FlandersModeratorAll you do is swap 3 resistors, that’s it dude.
January 24, 2009 at 10:41 pm #91699ErrenMemberI have a Russian Big Muff(New) i like the sound of pedal, actually it’s my first muff and i don’t know what is another muffs sounds like. Can somebody tell about sound characteristics of Muffs(Green,Ram’s Head,XO Series etc); espacially differences between Green and New Russian Big Muffs.
January 24, 2009 at 11:06 pm #91702Ned FlandersModeratorThe difference between the green and black is so subtle I bet no one can tell the difference in a blind test. Seriously, the green muff has mojo ans hype built around it but it only differs from the black by three resistors and I’ve modded a black muff to green muff and I couldnt tell the difference to be honest. I don’t like the sound of either black or green muffs stock, they sound awful and woofy/boomy and are unusable with chords IMO. That said, I own two black muffs and a green one but I’ve modded all of them in to NYC muffs.
The BMPTW is a great sounding muff, slightly nicer than the old NYC IMO and the LBM sounds similar to a ramshead muff and is good for bass, it can be a little boomy on chords on guitar but you can fix that easy enough.
January 24, 2009 at 11:27 pm #91709ErrenMemberHow can i mod the mine in to NYC muff you told about ?
I want to try if you tell me how to do but if you don’t want to tell your secret i dont mind . -
