I’m thinking about an ampless setup with my cab that involves using a .22 Caliber for the power amp, and I’m weighing my preamp options at the moment. I was wondering if putting an EHX tube pedal, such as an English Muff’N or a Hot Tubes, in the chain AFTER a boost pedal (I’m using both an EHX LPB-1 linear power booster and a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 MOSFET), would have the same effect as running these pedals in to the front end of a tube amp to get that crunchy overdriven tube amp sound. Would putting a boost pedal in front of a Hot Tubes drive the tubes even more for that hot tube sound I’m looking for, or would this cause damage to the pedal’s components and even the tubes themselves? Does the Hot Tubes have enough oomph and boost in it on its own that this is more or less unnecessary? Would this sound like complete crap? Any other suggestions for a good tube pre that sounds good when pushed with the LPB-1 and/or the Fulldrive? Thanks!

Pushing an LPB-1 into a Hot Tubes isn’t going to do any damage. I run high gain into my Black Finger often.

But the Hot Tubes has plenty of tasty tube gain, so you probably won’t need the booster in front.

Just don’t put any pedals after the .22. That will definitely do some damage.

I use many different boost/od’s before my english muff’n and it sounds amazing, never done any damage as far as i can tell, and apparently the english muff’n actually is a tube preamp like you would find in a tube amp, so im not positive but i dont think there should be a problem
