July 23, 2010 at 2:23 pm #110448MarkCMemberI’ve been experimenting with the Ring Thing for a few days. Awesome range of sounds. Being able to shape the notes by using the expression pedal adds so much expression.
I do have one issue I’m trying to figure out. When the unit is setup to function like a whammy pedal – going down an octave – if I hit the preset/tune button the pitch drops a bit even if the expression pedal is in the up position. I have to drop the pitch using the expression pedal and pull it up again to return to the correct pitch. I’m using a Roland ev-5. This happens when I’m using the preset or “what you see is what you get”. I was trying to drop the pitch down by using the expression pedal then hit the preset/tune buttom to move back to the initial setting for a hard pitch shift. It does change the pitch, but it’s slightly flat. I did make sure the expression pedal’s knob was working correct.

Did you save the preset with the pedal in the correct position (ex: tune the pedal with the toe down)? Is the Boss EV5 knob in the proper position? That’s basic troubleshooting, but I was having the same problem when using the EV5. It was temperamental at best and sometimes I would unplug the ring thing, shut down my power, start back up, make sure the ring thing sounded good on its own, plugged back in the exp pedal, and it still might do exactly as you’re describing, with off-pitch notes. That is, until the next day when it would work properly again. I’m convinced that its the EV5, and returned it and bought a Moog EP2 as mentioned before, but I can’t give a review for about 10 days when I return home from a long trip.July 27, 2010 at 5:09 pm #110509MarkCMemberI did re-save the patch with the toe down. I’m not sure why it matters? I thought the RingThing is supposed to save expression pedal settings. When I hit the Preset/Tune switch when the pedal is toe up for an octave down setting the pitch drops. I haven’t checked to see if the tuning is accurate. I did notice at one point during a rehearsal my octave down patch reverted back to the factory preset – octave up. Very weird.
I’m interested to hear if the Moog fixes some of the instability.

It only matters in that if you saved the setting while the pedal was, for example, in the middle somewhere, rather than toe up or toe down, it remembers the expression pedal setting in its actual location at the time of saving. Still haven’t gotten to try the EP2 yet, its waiting for me to get home next week.
August 3, 2010 at 8:22 pm #110651The Ghost of Sim TutMemberJust got home from a too-long trip to find the Moog EP2 had arrived. Thankfully, it works perfectly. Functionally, its doing what its supposed to do. Feature-wise its better than the Boss because it’s metal, heavy and stays where I put it. Also, it was $40 instead of the ludicrous $79 for the Boss. Plus, it says Moog on it. The one negative (for me) is the attached cable is straight instead of angled. Whatev..
So anyway, if anything else goes wrong I’ll report back but Sim Tut’s official recommendation goes to the Moog EP2. Yup, I’m official.
August 4, 2010 at 6:20 pm #110688plaguex1MemberI wanted one of these sense the first time I saw one. I’ll have to settle for my flanger hoax ring mod settings for now until I get the cash for one.

You could always order a right angled plug and replace it.

August 10, 2010 at 10:10 pm #110824sound objectiveMemberCan you tell me how you connected the Kaossilator to the external mod input? Is there some sort of conversion that needs to take place? (What kind of outputs does the kaossilator have? Just audio?)
thanks!!

You can use the headphone-out of the Kaossilator with a mini-to-mini stereo jack, then put a 1/4″ adapter on the tip to plug it into the RT. You have to turn the pedal’s ‘Wave’ knob full left or external oscillation won’t work.
My set-up’s actually more complicated, as I have the Kaossilator in a stereo channel on my mixer (with rca cables), then run the effects send to the Kaossilator. This way I can use the Korg on its own or into the RT.

Excellent – thanks. I just picked up the Ring Thing today. I’ll start playing with it tonight. I’ve got a Mopho Synth, which I think could produce some really cool inputs for the mod! Can’t wait.

I got my RT mouths ago,
but I had to send it back to my seller because I had a problem with the pitch while using the epxression pedal…
The pitch always got a little down the cross value I choose on the pedal when I plug the expression pedal.
The same in ring mod mode…
If I tune with the switch, in the toe position the pitch of the octave mode or ring mod is a little bit lower than it should be… I know I could fix it with the fine knob but it’s not supposed to be this way… :angry:When I unplug the exp pedal, it’s well pitched.
I tried many expression pedals, but it’s always the same…So I can’t use the whammy function or any epression pedal possibilitys because, it’s always a little bit lower than it should be!!!
I must know if it’s normal or if it’s because it is a deffective unit…
It’s been 3 mouths since I sent it back to the shop, and my unit still be there…Did you have the same problem? Specialy “The Ghost of Sim Tut” :rawk:
(I know, my english is not so good…)
Thanks for your answers !!!September 14, 2010 at 2:17 pm #111407The Ghost of Sim TutMemberQuote:Hi Everybody!I got my RT mouths ago,

Thanks for your answers !!!As I stated above, I had your same problems with almost all expression pedals I tried. In fact, I used a Roland (Boss) EV-5 and like you, I returned my first Ring Thing because it sounded weird when it was plugged in. The pitching was not right. So I got my new Ring Thing in the exchange but had the same problem with the same expression pedal.
So instead I returned the Boss/Roland expression pedal and bought the Moog EP-2. No more problems. This has been the only expression pedal that worked well with the RT and continues to work well. The Moog is also cheaper than all other options.
If you use a Moog EP2 I can almost promise you will not have any more of the issues you’re experiencing. Good luck!
September 20, 2010 at 8:53 am #111532johnman51MemberThank you very much for this great information! :thumb:
I think I will ask to the shop to send me my unit back…
But it seems to be clear that EHX did a mistake while building their units…
It should have been OK with any expression pedal..Anyway, I’ll buy the Moog EP-2 and ROCK AGAIN ! :rawk:
Thanks!
John.
