    Hello!

First of all sorry for my poor English… I’m French…

I will soon buy a new amp (Blackstar HT-5) which has no reverb but an effect loop.
I’d like to buy a Holy Grail or Holy Grail Plus pedal.
Can I (should I?) put the pedal in the effect loop of the amp, or should I put it between the guitar and the amp input?
If both are possible, what are the pros and cons of each solution?
Thanks in advance and best regards,
    Rémi

This debate resembles like “In which order should I put my pedals?”. There is no “right way” to do it. If you really like the pedal and the amp, get them both. Then try what sounds better for YOUR ears, if guitar>holy grail>amp or the fx loop. The one and only con that I find is that with your fx loop you need 3 cables (1 for guitar-amp and 2 for fx send-holy grail-fx return), instead of 2.

Hope that I’m helping and welcome to EHX :)

Thank you for this quick answer :)
If I clearly understand I can do what I want, that’s great!

In fact I was wondering if there was a technical reason to prefer one solution to the other.
I mean, for example, the level of the input signal on the pedal won’t be the same if it comes from the guitar or from the pre-amp in the effect loop. I was wondering if the pedals were designed to better work with a low level input (from the guitar) or with a higher level one?…
Does it make sens to ask this question? Maybe not… but maybe one solution gives a less noisy signal? Or less “color” on the signal?…

What is your opinion on this?
    Thank you and best regards,

I think there is a difference on the tone. Imagine you’ve got thousands of pedals all chained up, straight to the amp. The (clean) signal quality would be affected by multiple cables. With the FX loop the signal that goes thru the amp is pure and exclusive from your guitar. And about the input gain, it could be the same. The level that you put on a pedal affects it, if gain pedals is what you talk about, but since this is a time/mod effect, I don’t believe so. I don’t know any further of this subject, but as far as I can tell, its about preferences. There is a thread arround here discussing about that (or maybe a few posts haha). Enjoy the pedal, I wish I had one. Fell in love with flerb.

    hey

i have used mine in both the effects loop and straight into the amp

i have also placed it in different chain places too

i have the original holy grail reverb and use it within the loop on its own, my amp does have reverb built in, but im not too keen tbh

the only noticeable thing is a slight loss in volume, but very very minimal

not noticeable at gig level volumes, only when jamming at home

im changing it to the front of my amp, but last in the chain, i used to have it like this and like it too

    its always on aswell
    never turn it off

ill post some chain settings that i used it for and the good/bad points to it

    Merci

Thank you – I think this answers my question too.

I bought a Memory Toy on Saturday and was not convinced when used inline. The clean signal was gorgeous, but overdriven echoes – eeech! Very messy!

So I wanted to try putting it in the effects loop of my Laney AOR. But was concerned that it might explode or worse – stop working, if I connected it via the send and returns.

However I tentatively experimented with it and could hear no difference between the pedal connected and the signal when disconnected. So it didn’t seem to be overloading, in fact the only difference was a slight increase in volume of the dry part of the signal when the pedal is on – which is inherent in the unit.

And the sound now is perfect.

I prefer to place the HG+ in the Effects Loop of the amp.I don’t mind having to use 3 cables for this purpose.I find that when i put it in the front of my efx chain i.e Amp-HG+- etc etc…the reverb boosts up when i step on the drive pedal.
