Hey everyone, I’m new here in light of my search for a new Phaser. I like the Snall Stone but I also have my eye on the Hoax Flanging Phaser. My question is how good is the Hoax as a regular old Phaser?
I’m looking for a Phaser where I can do more than just control the rate (depth, rate, color, etc…). Currently, I’m playing a Boss PH-3 (it’s not that great but was a good intro into the world of Phasers) and I got it for the reasons that I could manipulate the effect a little more.
Any thoughts to share between the two effects in question? Thanks in advance!
February 7, 2010 at 5:56 am #107192Fender&EHX4everModeratorThe Hoax is an amazing pedal – one of my favorites. It’s a really idiosyncratic pedal that does its own thing, and as a phaser it is very unique because the 2 delay lines allow for some really interesting interactions.
But I would also check into the XO Stereo PolyPhase. The features are tailored to phase shifting, and you can get a wide variety of shapes and tones with it.

Check this site for comparisons (with clips): http://www.pedalarea.com/phasers.htm
If you want really tweakable though, the MuTron Phasor II is fantastic. If you want modern, the Red Witch Moon Phaser is good.February 7, 2010 at 10:00 am #107199Ned FlandersModeratorI have a vintage SmallStone that I absolutely love!!!!!!, If I was to buy another phaser it would be the Hoax for sure!

February 7, 2010 at 3:10 pm #107204wrbush31MemberI have looked into the Bad Stone but don’t see any ebay.
What I am gathering here is that a lot of you feel that the Hoax CAN be used as a phaser. My question is this, how does it work as a basic warm phaser? I feel like the concept of two delay lines together may make it hard to get simple sounds.
It’s like, I can have more fun and options with the Hoax but the Small Stone is a pedal that is pretty straight forward and you can’t go wrong. I wish there were more demos out there of the Hoax using it as a phaser and not just people showing off all the cool noises they can make.
Thanks, everyone. I’ll keep reading for more input.

I wouldn’t say it’s a very tweakable phase shifter at all, though the voicing is quite nice.Quote:a pedal that is pretty straight forward and you can’t go wrong.Based on this, I would say that the Hoax is too over-the-top for what you are looking for. Seriously, try the XO Stereo PolyPhase. It’s a great phaser.

I suppose I should also add that I’m trying not to spend a whole lot. Once I get whatever it is I end up with, I’d like to sell my Boss and be TERRIBLY deep in the hole still.
February 9, 2010 at 4:27 pm #107313wrbush31MemberWell, I ended up going with a Small Stone. Though it doesn’t give me as much “control,” I liked the tone the most and will send it in to get modded if the volume is an issue for me. PLUS, the price was right.
Thanks everyone for all the help.
