I think they sound great on clean (or almost clean) guitar, but if like me you are using loads of distortion or fuzz then I agree that they aren’t really needed.

But when you turn it up it will hit your amps preamp pretty hard and caused it to distort. I have been playing for 35+ years. 2 months ago I started using a BBE Sonic Stomp Box. I am now addicted to it, if you every try one you will be hooked for life. Along with a good distortion pedal, I use a 78 Deluxe Big Muff PI,or a Boss MD-2 it is a must. The info that comes with it says it time aligns the bass and the treble allowing both to hit your ear at the same time. It has 2 knobs one for LO Contour and one for Process. It makes any guitar sound better. Even if you think your guitar sounds great a BBE will make it sound much better. After a Big Muff or distortion pedal of your choice, buy a BBE sonic maximizer. You can get one for $99. You have got to try one. If anyone uses or try’s one please Post and tell us about it!

a compressor is good for a clean tone imo.
there’s no need to compress an already distorted and compress signal.
The small clone is a good and simple chorus.
I also have a LPB-1, but it just makes my Muff’s sound muddier for now.
I think it’s better use to boost the drive of an amp without a fuzz or distorsion pedal…
November 3, 2009 at 12:19 am #103209frances rhodesMemberi tried the micro pog and i was really disappointed, compared to the original pog.
i have a white finger and it’s definitely a great choice!!
although i would recommend a deluxe big muff that you can get quite easily in the UK more than a standard big muff, cause you have the soul preacher and the big muff circuits in it and you can switch and chose between those circuits in series or parallel and so blend the clean comp signal and the distorted signal together… that’s killer!!although if I had 320 pounds i would buy a HOG but i’m just saying!

I would get the BMPTW. its seems like its the most versatile.
I felt the same as you did for along time almost 20 years of playing never used a compressor ..Then a friend of mine was ranting and raving about his new Soul Preacher..He brought it over for me to check out..I plugged it in my chain and started playing and my tone was better than it was without it..Then i started finding my adjustments and fine tuning and my rig just started sounding better and better..I can’t sit here and tell you why or exactly what it does but it just does..
It is not like a huge difference it is kinda like bringing a camera into 100% focus from say 93% focus ..It just makes things that much clearer that much tighter it takes off some of the rough edges..This is on the Soul Preacher i have never owned any other compressor to compare it with..November 3, 2009 at 3:00 pm #103243chevParticipanthmm, you make me wanna try a soul preacher…even with the big muff…sometimes I play clean but I would have to find the right setting so I can leave it on.
I’m also going to retry my LPB-1.
it works okay at home but my M-Audio Audio Buddy preamp are too sensitive for it, it won’t go pass 9 o’clock on inst input…overlaod the soundcard? I even have to lower my guitar volume…
It might be different on my amps?

Ok forget what I said.
I just swaped my NS-2 for the LPB-1 yesterday, in front of my all my pedals, it gives an extra presence, and with the Muff’s and the Hoax, it sounds godly.
so it’s a must for any type of playing and tone.
next little upgrade will a be a Soul Preacher, for the price why not try it…
