I really don’t like D’daddarios, through the years i tried alot of strings including DRs, D’addarios, GHS, Arkays and Dean Markleys… for the last year or so i’m faithful to those GHS Dave Gilmour sets they seem just right for me
anyway… i play .010s on electric and .011 on acoustic… on electric i usually tune to drop D, acouctic is usually standart, sometimes DADGAD, so i don’t need to figure out odd sets of strings… fortunately i can’t really imagine that i’d have to really figure out what gauges are the best for me – it’s enough for me when i have to figure out placing of pedals in effects chain when it comes to accesories – i like to keep it simple
wow, that question grew quick. ive never really had the money to experiment around with strings, but my choice/main and only knowlageable choice has been earnie ball slinky and when somebody says that ehx are way better, i cant wait to try em. also, i was thinking, for a longer sustain, would you want 9’s or 11’s?
i’d use 11′ except that i’d probably use 10′ (i play tele) 9′ are very comfortable, but they are too floppy sometimes, according to my experiences they go out of tune easily and have a little bit of a problem to intonate right when you hit’em hard

heavier strings have more sustain and sound ‘better’.
if you’re currently using 9s, then i’d go to 10s on your next string change, then 11s after that – the jump from 9s straight to 11s is probably a bit too much of a change in one go.
Just to revive an old thread, I’ve recently become addicted to open G.
I just can’t stop playing bluesy slide stuff on my spare guitar (now pretty much permanently tuned to G).
Apart from the obvious ‘Stones’ stuff (Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, Honkey Tonk Woman, Gimme Shelter) and some Eagles of Death Metal and Dandy Warhols (Bohemian Like You) – does anyone know of any other good tunes done in open G?
I almost always play EG#BEG#B
but if I’m not I play D Standard.
I made this up myself after fiddling around with some different tunings.
I was told it’s a dobro tuning, so neato I guess.
