Does anyone here use open tunings? Yesterday I tuned my Tele to open E. I ran through a bunch of songs we’re covering with my band and found that I can pretty much play anything that way too. It sounds really fresh and it’s a lot of fun figuring out where all the different chords and scales are. If you haven’t, try it! It’s great way to get out of a rut. If anyone has tips and tricks, I’d love to hear from you.
i also use DADGAD but “use” is more like “tune my acoustic like that when i want to improvise and just get silly a little” here
seriously – i love this tuning. i’m a big fan of drop D, so i feel comfortable in it and DADGAD is very funny to improvise in – it’s really not hard to come up with something that sounds awesome and “fresh” to you. But when it comes to a proper songwriting – nothing better than good ol’ drop D (or standart… but… meh…)
and open Dm is also interesting although i don’t use it that much, it’s cool
I always have the same gauge and tuning on the bottom two strings for that droning sonic youth-esque sound. I have one guitar tuned in DDDDAA ,its my favorite tuning! As for the tunings I created, i dont give them out cause I’m kinda secretive about how I do things musically. 😆
NOTE: you should always swap gauges when you use odd tunings to get the most out of your guitar, dont stick to a standard set, make your own sets. It takes me two or three sets or more to string one guitar. That’s one of the reasons I buy 24 packs at a time for 3 bucks each set from http://www.webstrings.com/ great strings!
Doing this also prevents some strings being too tight and some being too loose.

yeah, that’s part of the reason I stopped doing it….
buying custom sets of strings was working out pretty pricey!!
I dont change string much as i play a jaguar mostly which is bright even with old and dull strings so i can get away with it and I never break strings either so I leave them on for months at a time.

why don’t you buy single strings? or would that work out more expensive?
