Home › Forums › Help/Technical Questions › Not sure about Germanium Big Muff
Well, hi there. Been looking in to EHX fuzz pedals. After reviewing couple of em, i came to Big Muff 4 Germanium because price is tempting and I want versatility.
But still not sure. Ive a strat loaded with pretty hot dimarzio pickups.
Ive been looking in to developing my own tone, yet to be close to this: Them Crooked Vultures, Foo Fighters, White Stripes, Nirvana, Breeders, QoTSA and little bit of everything else. Something bluesy with edge of hard rock and grunge.
Also, Ive read that Germanium isnt that hot and its pretty toned down pedal overall.
Any tips, suggestions?
Sorry if wrong forum section.Ty
Based on the bands you list, a standard Big Muff is going to work better than the G4. The G4 is really more of a Fuzz Face type circuit, with an extra overdrive circuit. It sounds nothing like a Big Muff, so you won’t get any of the huge White Stripes or QUOTSA Muff-like tones. It does not have that kind of bottom end or distortion character.
Hm. Ive toyed around with standart Muff a lot and it has really narrow sound, at least to me. It has the same pattern, im looking for versatility.
also forgot that Im into Smashing Pumpkins kinda hallow, roary sound. see `Zero` for that.
Devi Ever Rocket. Sorry EHX.

that thing is extra-ulti rare.
and also i maybe hit the wrong preview video but that thing is a little bit too crazy, just a little. ive really hot-melted pickups in strat already.
while i want to play Nirvana and SP and I want to have a very gentle blues edge to it also, melodic.
standart muff has a bit too sharp edge to it.
also I noticed that germanium has too much for buzz-fuzz for my ear, id like to find something a bit cleaner, but not as sharp and iceclean as big muff.
just discovered this thing called Empress Multidrive. seems OK, but the price kills me a bit. anything around that kind of pedals with lesser price?
Try the Bass Big Muff [the green XO one]. it’s based closer to the russian big muffs but the mode that turns the ‘volume’ knob into a blend knob allows for a lot more sonic variation.
