I’m wondering what’s out there… I need/Want something to replace my Boss DD-20. I use it set to longgg delays with the feedback up which allows me to create long textures that are seamless on the first pass over the loop start. With the feedback knob all the way up, they don’t fade out, don’t begin to self oscillate; and just create a loop. Wondering if there’s anything else out there that works like this?
I like the DOD/Digi PDS series a lot, but they are very funky. Wondering more what is out there in more modern terms…
Was recently looking at a Maneco looper, but finding info and any decent review is almost impossible. Also they are $$$.
June 26, 2009 at 5:23 am #98417ghostMemberWith the delay set to FULL on the DD-20 you can essentially layer loops forever and they don’t fade at all. The loop time is just too long to feedback on itself. Does that make sense?
If there’s a setting on the Hazarai that can do this please inform me, I haven’t found it yet. All the settings I have saved all either feedback or fade over time. I think it might just be a matter of having a reallly long delay time, so the feedback adjustment is less important. I kind remember that about the DD-5 actually that it would ride the line of holding delays for a long time w/o feeding back onto itself.
The DD-20 I would literally just sit there for a 20 minute long live set and play into the delay, slowaly building yextures, and if I wanted I could pull off the feedback a bit and it’d fade the previous layers out. But those units could go for hours before the sound got too mangled. The only issue, and it’s a big one for me, is the sound quality. They just have too much line noise, hiss, and mudd to them.
The other thing that was great about that unit was that the clocks between units were dead on. You could sync two of them and they’d stay in sync forever, just off the clock.

And it really is just the sound quality, with the Boss unit. It’s fine for live use, but studio use – each pass builds up more and more layer of ultra high end hiss. This realistically can be fixed with an EQ – which is something I haven’t tried.
I was kind of just curious what other options there were out there. I’m not going to get rid of the DD-20 regardless, I have too much of a past with it, and know it WAY too well. The Hazarai has just knocked it off my board for now, and I was wondering before putting it back on if there was something out there that could do what I needed.

I was never honestly happy with the sound either, and never really felt like using them live, or in the studio for that matter. Not enough presence, not enough dynamics and too much hiss. They always seemed to take some of the original signal away for which I had to compensate on EQ down the line. I don’t use them any more.
