June 12, 2009 at 6:02 pm #97809TheCapitalJMemberSome metal but mainly hard rock (bands, Slipknot, System of a down , blink 182 , madina lake)
they don’t all need to be ehx
June 12, 2009 at 6:24 pm #97811julianModeratorMetal Muff
June 12, 2009 at 8:03 pm #97818TheCapitalJMemberis that true bypass
June 12, 2009 at 8:14 pm #97823ChumleyParticipantWrong question. And yes, I’m pretty sure it is. Whoever told you pedals need to be True Bypass should be thoroughly lectured. You can only really hear the difference in extreme cases (eg, a Crybaby) or if you have an otherwise pristine setup. Which I doubt.
In any case, this is my friend’s setup, who has very similar tastes to you: Tube Zipper->Metal Muff->Stereo Memory Man w/Hazarai
It’s a very nice $425 rig. You can get those ominous clean sounds with the SmMw/H, really intense metal sounds with the MM, and stuff ranging from trippy to funky with the Tube Zipper.
If you have a bigger budget, I’d probably splurge on a MicroPOG. Or a POG2.
June 13, 2009 at 6:22 pm #97859TheCapitalJMembercan you use a a battery or just the power supply
June 13, 2009 at 9:29 pm #97867ghostMemberI’d focus on a solid amp based on the music you’ve mentioned.
Messa Boogie is what most of the bands you’ve mentioned use for amps.
As for effects I think they mostly use digital multi effects – maybe a whammy or two in there as well.
I’d play with different distortions: muffs, old ibanez boxes, digitech (they seem to focus on music of these type of bands), etc..
I’d also maybe (I can’t stand ’em, but who knows) check out one of the newer boss multi floor units with the exp/vol pedal and assignable effects.
June 13, 2009 at 9:39 pm #97868Ned FlandersModeratorThe Metal Muff with 3band EQ is great, no its not true bypass but it has a great buffer that doesn’t interfere with other pedals, at least not the ones I’ve tried.
Its a fucking great pedal, one of the best high gain distortions around IMO.June 14, 2009 at 4:13 am #97878ChumleyParticipantQuote:I’d focus on a solid amp based on the music you’ve mentioned.Messa Boogie is what most of the bands you’ve mentioned use for amps.

Sorry, I disagree (mostly). The amp advice is good; def go Mesa Boogie, ‘specially if you have an Ibanez, ESP, or other guitar of the sort.
Whatever you do, don’t go BOSS multi. They sound shitty, are overpriced, and are no fun to play with.
The one Digitech series that I endorse is Hardwire. A good dirt section would be Hardwire Valve Distortion/Metal Muff; the VD has some amazing bluesy tones, and also works as a nice (almost) clean boost for even more MM craziness. And it’s cheap. So, let’s revise that board I suggested:Valve Distortion (which is true bypass)->Metal Muff (buffered bypass, which I find better)->SMMw/H (Can’t remember, but you have a buffer in front of it anyway, so it should be fine). You prolly’ll want a Wah in there, as well. I recommend Vox. And yes, all of those pedals are battery enabled.
June 14, 2009 at 9:25 am #97885TheCapitalJMemberI think i’d be happy with just the metal muff for dirt.
Also the tube zipper sounds pretty wah (ish)
June 14, 2009 at 2:47 pm #97894TheCapitalJMemberwait the diago powerstation (what I will be powering the pedals with) doesn’t take the tube zipper! So i’ll have the bassballs. Also i’m happy the big muff pi as i’m mostly playing hard rock
June 14, 2009 at 4:18 pm #97896ChumleyParticipantOh, you made it sound like you were into metal… my bad.
If you’re into hard rock, def go with the BMP. Also, on the subject of Tube Zipper, I meant manual wah, not autowah. But if you’re cool with autowah, then Bassballs is a great choice. So:
Bassballs->Big Muff->Stereo Memory Man?
That sound like it? Sorry if I’m being too in-your-face, but gear is my thing, and nothing makes me happier than thinking that I’m helping people…
June 14, 2009 at 4:25 pm #97898CostchParticipantHere’s a novel idea: Don’t try to emulate the tone of other’s or base your tone on an archetype. Create, don’t emulate. Unless you want to. It’s your prerogative.
June 14, 2009 at 6:31 pm #97902TheCapitalJMembergood point i was acaully(wrong spelling) thinking of somthing that will fit the board easy like the mxr carbon copy not the SMMW/HH also where is the best place for tuner pedal?
