Hi guys

Just posting to say i goy myself that japanese fender jazzmaster today finally

It’s amazing to play, and sounds pretty sweet too (mind you, it could do with a bit more output from the pickups)

here’s some pics:

(Apologies for the blurry quality of this pic – my camera dislikes closeups)

My only criticism is that the setup is very odd. the high E string is set much lower than the rest of the strings. Still it’s a dream to play. I’m a fan of XTC (ever heard of them?) and this guitar gets me a sound very close to Dave Gregory’s “touring era” tone, which is always a bonus!

And my god it sounds amazing with the big muff.. Pure grunge!

EDIT: ok, the edge of the frame has kinda cut off the edge of the photos :doh:. is there any way of resizing the pics with BBcode?

FURTHER EDIT: For the sake of this not being a bit of a spammy “HAI GUIZE I GOTS ME AN NEW AXE!!!” thread, i think we should use this to discuss jazzmasters and jaguars and help people with that infamous bridge if and when they need some advice? seems like these are popular guitars among EHX users, so it could be useful to have this kind of thread.

I gotta say I’m not a fan of white on red. I’d switch that over to a black guard IMO. My girlfriend would like you to know she likes it though, haha. (what a catch right? We can look at pedals and gear together) My rhythm guitarist plays a Jaguar, and its also a pain in the ass to setup properly, much like the jazzmasters. Once they finally get setup properly, they play like a dream though.

yeah, i’m struggling with the setup a bit at the moment. it’s nice to play because i sorted out the weird setup of the action (the 2 E strings were far lower than the other strings, and were buzzing like mad against the frets), but the saddles are still very rattly. i’m told new saddles can solve this (graphtech string saver or fender mustang saddles), and that the buzz-stop cures the audible buzzing you get through the amplified signal from the strings buzzing against them due to there not being enough tension. still, that’s an additional Â£55 to fix a guitar that was reduced by Â£115 because of a few little scratches in the finish.

Cool guitar. I’ve always liked the jazzmaster/jaguar design, but i’ve just never gotten one. Eventually i will though.

Once you learn how to set up jaguars etc setting them up is as easy as doing a strat, there’s really nothing to it its just different that’s all.

well, the screws have started to fall out of the saddles :S but apparently PTFE tape fixes this?!?

it is something i’m going to try, anyway.

yeah, that’s because the radius of the fretboard doesn’t match the bridge…I’d recommend getting one of these then you can set the height of the 4 outside strings.

I finally tried out a jazzmaster today at the guitar store. It sounded pretty good. It was one of the $800 classic player ones, not the 62 reissue.

I can adjust the height of all the strings with the stock bridge. The fret buzz was cured as soon as i raised the action.

PTFE tape fixed the rattling grub screws, then the high E string intonation screw started to fall out…

I’ve been told by a guy who has a 1965 jaguar (among many other valuable guitars – he owns the original ’53 les paul goldtop which features in the haynes gibson les paul manual!) that a buzz-stop should sort this out as well as improving tone, sustain and playability. he has one on his, and the chances are he knows his stuff.

Matching headstock!!! I love it.

Use red loc-tite or something similar to keep the screws from moving, get them where you want them then dab it on with a toothpick. They’ll never move again, so make sure that you have everything set up properly before you glue it! I had my action set too high and I can’t lower it without dabbing everything with nail polish remover.

What gauge string do you use and are you attached to it? I solved literally 100% of the typical Jazzmaster problems with .012-.052 strings and loc-tite.

I know I’m a bit of a purist, but I have to say: the Buzzstop removes almost all of the resonance behind the bridge, killing alot of the Jazzmaster sound. It’s a perfectly fine solution if you’re after a guitar to play and you want to use lighter strings, but I advise against it if you’re after that ‘Jazzmaster sound.’ There’s alot to be said for that string behind the bridge.

Like I said, a bit of a purist…
