Recently I decided to put together a small, portable setup for home and jamming. Here is the effect chain:
Polytune> Nano Big Muff> Worm> Memory Toy> BBE Sonic Stomp> ZT Lunchbox
For the sake of this post, the only non-EHX gear I will mention is the pickup I ended up using.
The guitar I am using was initially using a SD Invader. Both the Worm and the Memory Toy would distort using this high output pickup so I put in a FRED. FRED still was overloading the effects so I dug around and found an old DiMarzio DP103(not the new one)and this was the magic touch my guitar needed to make this work. [strong]In my experience the WORM and the Memory Toy do not like higher output pickups!!![/strong] I also had to lower the pickup quite a bit to keep the transient notes from peaking out the effects but the chain sweetened up very nicely!!! Yes I know I could use the volume knob to roll off the output but I am adverse to taking anything away, the DP103 is a sweet PAF style pickup!
OK so now that I have those issues out of the way let’s talk about the effects.
Nano Big Muff- I have used a Little Big Muff so that’s my only comparison. The Nano sounds hotter, harsher, and more modern than the Little but still very worthy of the Big Muff lineage! Love it!
Worm-
Wah, I kind of expected an envelope filter type thing but it really has it’s own sound. Hard to explain… very round can get really wet sounding… can be too much in your face but in a mix is probably good.
Phase, Do not really like it. I was hoping to be able to do a really shallow phase with a dreamy sweep but it kind of folds weird at the bottom of the sweep. HOWEVER, on manual mode the range can be used kind of like a parametric sweep to dial in some very cool mid-specific tones!
Trem, Can be dialed in to make some very intense trem pulses. In your face but very usable!
Vibe, this is my favorite effect on the unit. Very subtle, vintage, can be mixed in with other effects nicely. Is it worth the whole unit? no.
One other note, all this stuff requires the included 24v wall wart. So there’s one more wire coming out of your pedal board.
As I spend more time with this pedal I am liking it more and more, but not that much. So far I feel as if I should have stayed with separate effects.Memory Toy, Just about every spot I set the dials I find usable tones! The mod switch adds in that dreamy chorusey tone to sweeten everything up clean or distorted! Don’t expect tape delay, just nice analog slight grainyness… very nice Love it!

Funny(ish) story about the memory toy; I picked up a Vox delaylab a few months after getting the memory toy. Lots of options, lots of cool sounding stuff, but in terms of pure sonic quality, it was all memory toy. So the delay lab left my main pedalboard, and on went the memory toy.
