In regards to earlier posts, I’ve never had any trouble running bass into a Holy Grail. Matter of fact, I think it sounds great! And isn’t the Knockout marketed half to bass players as well? I seem to recall Dan Miller saying something about how it’s great for bass in the demo… Maybe I’m thinking of the Steel Leather and just made up that part about the demo. Regardless, some other EHX pedals I really dig for bass:
Small Clone / Clone Theory / Polychorus
Double Muff / Big Muff
Hazarai
Soul Preacher
Q Tron / Tube Zipper
HOG (moreso than the POG because the HOG does 3rds and 5ths)FWIW, McCartney’s sound in “Think for Yourself” is my favorite alltime fuzz-bass tone, and Claypool’s work on “Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People” is my holy grail of bass effects usage; low end is not traditionally my greatest concern (although none of those pedals cut much anyways).

would a bass ehx pedal sound good with a guitar like a bass sounds good with some guitar ehx pedals? I’ve been wondering that for a while.
March 31, 2009 at 12:30 am #95059McHavenModeratorTypically what can make a pedal work better for bass is a wider allowable range due to caps. On some pedals, if that cap is changed to allow a greater range, it can work to muddy up guitar tone due to increased bass.

April 1, 2009 at 1:15 pm #95103JRigglesMemberMcHaven is right, although I’m sure there’s got to be an exception with ‘some’ guitar playing ‘some’ particular genre. Like he says, it comes down to caps.
(still…more bass)May 6, 2009 at 12:56 am #96410WatsonWoodMemberEHX have got 6 dedicated bass pedals right now, from the Bass Big Muff Pi to the Steel Leather, so that is a start…and there are quite a few of the vintage EHX bass pedals out there to be picked up too. The Mole works well on bass as does the #1 Echo, not to mention the Octave Multiplexer.
A Bass Mistress would be cool!May 13, 2009 at 12:10 am #96633xupxthepunxxMemberi have the bassballs and the steel leather and now im looking to get a distortion pedal to finish my setup, i know that EHX has the bass blogger and the big muff pi, i play in a punk band and do you think i would be better off with the extra sustain or fuzz?

It gives the bass player a good cutting edge. So in your case, xupxthepunxx, I would definitely try one out. It also has the “dying battery” feature which produces fantastic noises (!) which remain under full control of the player. The only other pedal I would recommend to do the job is the Ampeg Vintage Re-issue Scrambler however that pedal is way more expensive.
The EHX Germanium OD costs around 99 Euro in Germany (Thomann) and around 100 Quid in the UK (Dolphin Music) though I reckon it should be possible to get a better price than that in the UK!Here is a demo that shows the range of tones one can get from stuttering crackles to nasty distortion to cutting fuzz. All of which should sound extremely good on bass.

… and I added a pic for good measure….
