With apologies if I’ve already posted something on this thread, (I wrote something, but it does not appear to been posted) but I found this forum whilst researching the special edition Mogwai Big Muff. I have had one of these since they were new, though it has never been used. I was an enthusiastic collector of guitars some years back as a (successful) way of maintaining a meaningful relationship with my teenage son. He plays, regrettably I don’t and with the premature onset of arthritis in my hands it seems ever more unlikely. He’s now married to an American girl and has emigrated to San Diego.

Anyway, I have one of the 100 Mogwai boxes which I’ve kept safe and sound in my loft for no other reason that I didn’t know what to do with it. I was going to list it on e-bay, but it seems sensible to at least make the first mention of it where it will be most appreciated. I’m only selling it because I’ve bought a 1955 Buick, which is rare in the UK where I live and my finances have taken a hit as a result. Is anyone on the forum likely to be interested and if so, what sort of price do these things go for? Thanks for listening.

Hi mate there is a thread about them here.

    https://www.ehx.com/forums/viewthread/149/

could you please do us all a massive favour and open it up and take some pictures of the insides because nobody seems to be able to find out just what version of the muff is inside and if it is any different to a regular muff. If you could do that before you sell it, we’d really appreciate it. .. as for value, no idea.. but If I had one I wouldn’t let it go for under £200….maybe more than that.

    How did you acquire it?

oh, btw… it is against the forums policy to sell directly on here (long story) but if you wanted to list it somewhere else and link from here that’s fine as long as the ‘deal’ isn’t done on this forum. :)

I certainly have no objections to opening it up, as long as I’m in no danger of damaging it. I was a regular reader of several guitar magazines, which I thoroughly enjoyed even though I was a beginner. I entered a competition and won it! It was the first, and probably last, competition I ever won. I certainly was not intending to sell it under £200. I’d rather keep it as a curiosity. It just seems a shame that I can’t use it. I recall some time back a forum member in the US saying he’d pay $500. Recalling that is what tempted me to join the forum. Even so it’s taken me a while to actually do it.

Understood. I don’t want to upset anyone. However, if someone expresses an interest they can always arrange to contact me direct, or I’ll list it on e-Bay. However, if there appears to be no serious interest it can go back in the loft.

it’s almost impossible to value them because they just don’t come up on ebay, which is probably the best way to value everything else.

I’d expect you might get some PM’s about it soon. :)

if you just take the four screws out on the front and just carefully lift the top off everything will remain attatched to top half so you won’t damage anything, I’d love to see inside!

oh, that’s fantastic that you won it…. $500 is about £345 these days, I think I’d be happy with that price! :) … although, these will never go down in value so if you don’t need the money i’d hang onto it for another 10 years!

Here are a couple of pictures that I’ve taken. I hope they show enough as I’m not keen on stripping it down completely to see the other side of the pcb.

Could you tell us what’s printed on the circuit board? Should be an EC-xxxx number and possibly a Rev number.

I’ll undo it again and see what’s there.

It says “EC3003” at the top of the board and “SEP 01 00” at the bottom. Does this help?

That does help. Any chance of a pic of the number while you’ve got it apart? Sorry to be a pain but these appear so rarely and we’d like to get as much info about it as we can.

You might want to leave it apart for a day or 2 while we milk it of any info we can get.

If you really need the info’ I am prepared to undo the front switches to release the PCB so you can see the components on the other side.
