Wow, gak.co.uk now have the MXR Carbon Copy at £96 (down from £118 – all you Americans, please don’t laugh at the UK price!). I’d like to think it’s a reaction to the new Memory Boy and (imminent) Memory Toy. I’m wondering, if the EH pedals prove sucessful, the Copy may come down in price further. Saying that though, if the Memory Toy (it’s the one I’d go for) proves itself a worthy alternative….

September 3, 2009 at 10:14 pm #101157dsl1MemberI’m gonna check one out tomorrow (& a 22 Caliber).
I’m a little more than tempted.
September 9, 2009 at 10:08 pm #101328modalmoodMemberI have seen several references to “ducking” in these forums when talking about the Memory Boy (and/or delay pedals in general). Can someone enlighten me as to what this means? Thanks very much.

Some people/manufacturers call this dynamic delay as well,

Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply.

you might be better off with the Hazarai or #1 Echo (both digital) for clean repeats.
…if you can get a video or recording done someone will be able to tell you if it’s normal.

the quality is very low but i think you can understand…! check it out pls whatch in HD
September 14, 2009 at 9:02 am #101441electro-melxModeratoryeah, that sounds ‘normal’ to me….
….it might seem strange to you (and me if i’m honest) but that lo-fi quality is exactly why people like analogue delays.
as someone has commented on your video: “that’s the point of Analog delay, bro. it distorts as it repeats.”
…well, I woudn’t say it was ‘the point’ but it is something they do by nature of design when pushing the delay time to it’s limits…. that’s why digital delays were created so people could have massive delay times without loss of quality.

September 15, 2009 at 3:27 pm #101492dmc777MemberMaybe this will help a bit. I recently stumbled across a late 70’s MXR M118 analog delay. I have to admit the sound was very close to the MB except the MB, of course, has more options and longer delay times. So you gotta give credit to EHX in that they succeeded in developing a low cost analog delay for everyone. Sure it’s lo-fi but that’s what you can expect in an analog delay. I think everyone, myself included, has been spoiled by the DMM because it sounds so good! It doesn’t really sound lo-fi to my ears just a clean analog delay.
September 15, 2009 at 7:08 pm #101496modalmoodMemberI discovered something about my Memory Boy the other night. I was using it with a battery and, among other malfunctions I found I couldn’t get any repeats after about 2 o’clock on the Delay knob. Well, maybe one repeat but VERY low-fi. Too much so to be useful. I then removed the battery and plugged it into the wall with the power supply that came with the unit and viola! Perfect (but nice and low-fi) repeats all the way up on the Delay knob. I’d say the box works much better plugged in than with the battery and IMHO is how it should be used. For what it is worth.

By the way, the only difference that I can detect between the MB and the EHX Memory Man is the Gain dial which seems to allow you to drive the pedal (MM) to overload (and light up an LED). This slight distortion can be heard on a lot of U2’s stuff. It is well documented that The Edge is a big fan of the Memory Man. He can be seen using it in the movie “It Could Get Loud”. Check out this video for a demo of what I’m talking about.

Does anyone else agree with me regarding the MM vs the MB?

I MUST ADMIT I’M NOT AS WILD ABOUT THIS PEDAL AS EVERYONE ELSE. THIS IS MY FIRST ELECTRO HARMONIX PEDAL AND I KNOW THEY’RE QUIRKY BUT THE MEMORY BOY IS WAY OUT OF LINE IMHO. FIRST OF ALL ALL THE SLOWER DELAY SPEEDS ARE BEYOND 3:00 ON THE DIAL. I PREFER A MORE EVEN DISTRIBUTION (LIKE THE CARBON COPY WHICH I ALSO HAVE). ALSO THE MODULATION (CHORUS AND VIBRATO)IS MUCH TOO PRONOUNCED TO BE USEFUL TO ME. TURN UP THE DEPTH EVEN A SMALL AMOUNT AND IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR GUITAR IS OUT OF TUNE. SWITCH TO “SQUARE WAVE” AND THE PEDAL EMITS RANDOM NOTES OF A VARIETY OF PITCHES. IS THIS THE WAY THE PEDAL IS SUPPOSED TO WORK?? IN THE STORE IT WAS DOING THE SAME THING. I CHECKED IT OUT IN A SHOP THEN BOUGHT IT ONLINE WITH A 30 DAY REFUND POLICY. (THE SHOP ONLY ONLY GAVE STORE CREDIT ON RETURNS.) I’LL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH IT FOR A WHILE. IF IT DOESN’T IMPROVE IT’S GOING BACK TO THE MAD APE FOR A REFUND. MOST LIKELY I’LL BE KEEPING THE CARBON COPY WHICH IS MUCH MORE PREDICTABLE.
Patience my son. I found it very predictable once you figure it out. If you dont like modulation, simply turn depth all the way to 0 and modulation is OFF 100%. The knobs are sensitive because of the wide range. I could see how some of the functions would be useless if your not into the modulating. If you want slapback clean delay you can get it with this pedal but its made to do way more than that. I had to relearn the knobs range compared to my old delay but this is the case with any new pedal. Give the boy another chance :~)
