Picked one up today….
Sounds GREAT. Honestly, I think it’ll replace. My dmm.
Square mod is cool, buy weird. Expression in on delay time
is AmaZinG; you can set the blend at about 8/9 oclock and
play straight while having subtle foot controlled destruction of
your playing. I noticed two strange things so far: when the expression pedal is
inserted the audio gets a strange digital lo-fi bit crunched sound
to it. I personally like this, but it’s weird. With expression not attached it sounds
full and slightly dark. Also with expression in I noticed you can get the max delay
a bit longer than you can w/o the exp. As you can toe up to extend the range further.$90! Still can’t believe that price!
It does lack the overdrive of the dmm and the sound I’ll need to a/b to decide, but
I like the coontrol options here so much more. Came with a power supply. Box says, “your boy wonder”.
First time I’ve gotten ehx stickers with a pedal though.I was in senile before, but now I know I’m going to end ip with a toy & a boy.
August 11, 2009 at 3:29 am #100483ghostMemberIt also seems to have better “ducking” than my dmm. Meaning it responds to
the dynamics of playing better, and allows new chords to “reset the out of control feedback. .August 11, 2009 at 5:07 am #100486julianModeratorthanks for the review
I think I’m going to wait til my birthday to get one though myself
August 11, 2009 at 9:04 pm #100508SiriustarMemberI agree on pretty much everything here. I took a peek inside, and MAN did they cram a lot in there. Sounds really good, though. There are a bunch of mini trims on the inside. I twisted one a little and it stopped working, so I twisted it back. Don’t think I’ll mess with that again.
August 12, 2009 at 12:29 am #100514andvari7ParticipantWhere are you people finding these things? I’m not about to go on eBay, and buy a pedal without trying it first. Not again. Even if that is how I bought a large percentage of my pedals. Anyway, the shops in my area, and I’ll bet the Chicago Music Exchange, don’t carry them, and I want to try one before I plunk down $90 on one, even though I probably will anyway. If it can do the earthquake-making bit my Carbon Copy can, I might just be able to offer up enough collateral for a Stereo Polyphase.

August 14, 2009 at 7:23 pm #100588dmc777MemberJust got mine in yesterday and played with it for about an hour or so comparing it to my original DMM and DD-5. I don’t have the expression pedal. But I’ve got to admit, so far my impression on this pedal isn’t very good. It needs a level knob added to it cause it’s very dark and hard to hear the repeats no matter how you set it….unless you turn the blend knob to about 3 oclock but then is washes out your original signal. You have to turn the blend knob atleast halfway up to get a good sound. Also, there seems to be modulation in the delays even when the depth is completely off. The delay knob is weird as well. I would think that halfway would be about 250ms but it isnt…and it’s very sensitive. Small incremints make a big difference. I was going to send it back but I think I’ll keep it just try it some more. It’s worth 98 though! Guess I was just expecting it to sound a little better. You can definately get some crazy sounds out of it though if you’re in to that kind of stuff.
August 15, 2009 at 12:03 am #100594ghostMemberSo far my favorite setting is when you plug the expression in and extend the delay time to the fullest… You get this really grainy PDS style lo-fi delay sound. I love it…
August 17, 2009 at 5:15 am #100643st.bedeMemberthank for your review ghost and also dmc77….(I could easily justify $90 for weird sound alone but that is me…)
August 19, 2009 at 7:58 pm #100745modalmoodMemberSORRY FOR YELLING BUT MY KEYBOARD IS STUCK ON “CAPS LOCK” (COFFEE SPILLAGE RIGHT INTO THE KEYBOARD). DUH.
I MUST ADMIT I’M NOT AS WILD ABOUT THIS PEDAL AS EVERYONE ELSE. THIS IS MY FIRST ELECTRO HARMONIX PEDAL AND I KNOW THEY’RE QUIRKY BUT THE MEMORY BOY IS WAY OUT OF LINE IMHO. FIRST OF ALL ALL THE SLOWER DELAY SPEEDS ARE BEYOND 3:00 ON THE DIAL. I PREFER A MORE EVEN DISTRIBUTION (LIKE THE CARBON COPY WHICH I ALSO HAVE). ALSO THE MODULATION (CHORUS AND VIBRATO)IS MUCH TOO PRONOUNCED TO BE USEFUL TO ME. TURN UP THE DEPTH EVEN A SMALL AMOUNT AND IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR GUITAR IS OUT OF TUNE. SWITCH TO “SQUARE WAVE” AND THE PEDAL EMITS RANDOM NOTES OF A VARIETY OF PITCHES. IS THIS THE WAY THE PEDAL IS SUPPOSED TO WORK?? IN THE STORE IT WAS DOING THE SAME THING. I CHECKED IT OUT IN A SHOP THEN BOUGHT IT ONLINE WITH A 30 DAY REFUND POLICY. (THE SHOP ONLY ONLY GAVE STORE CREDIT ON RETURNS.) I’LL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH IT FOR A WHILE. IF IT DOESN’T IMPROVE IT’S GOING BACK TO THE MAD APE FOR A REFUND. MOST LIKELY I’LL BE KEEPING THE CARBON COPY WHICH IS MUCH MORE PREDICTABLE.

I understand you want more than the CC will give you, but what exactly are you getting that the CC can’t do? Out of tune modulation? Almost all superfast delay times? The delay knob seems to do slapback until around 3:00 before slowing down. Maybe I’m dense but I just can’t get it to sound the way I want it to.
August 20, 2009 at 12:13 am #100753ChumleyParticipantAtonal noise is fun. Deal.
August 20, 2009 at 1:30 am #100757modalmoodMemberI hear you guys. I’m going to play around with it some more tonight. I already did actually and it definitely has its good points and special sounds. Not that it needs MY approval!
August 20, 2009 at 2:40 am #100760ghostMemberThe Chorus/vib on the DMM is the same way for me. I’ve never wanted to put either past about one notch up..
Boy VS Carbon.. Trying to think of straight musical uses… more delay time… The ability to achieve lo-fi delays.. Also I think the Feedback ducking is better on the Boy…
Carbon copy is simple and also great though, just different. I’d keep ’em both for sure.
