I noticed that the Mel 9 effect volume level is significantly lower than the dry signal. If I have the dry knob completely CCW so it is off, and the effect level completely CW, so all I hear is the effect, then when I step on the pedal, the volume is much lower than the pure guitar level. And if I turn the dry level up even to only 9:00, it’s significantly louder than the effect volume. Is this by design? Or is there something wrong with my unit? I bought it used.

No that is not right they should be even or very close.
Please write the techs at info@ehx.com

It could be some weird impedance issue. Please try it with a different amp/set up first

Thanks, I emailed ehx support, and Chip confirmed the pedal should not act that way.

When I noticed the problem, I had the pedal on my pedalboard with other effects in front of in, with the EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress immediately in front. All effects were turned off except the Mel 9. Tonight I played through just the Mel 9 with no other effects in front, and there was no volume problem. So the Mel 9 is fine. Now I have to figure out which one in front of it was causing the problem.

Great To be honest the Mel9 should be in front of all the other pedals to work correctly. It needs a strong clean guitar sound to work.
I would not put a flange in front of it.
