Hi,
I have had for the past 3 weeks a Magnum 44 Power Amp (which I use
connected to a 16 ohm speaker cabinet), and have used it successfully,
until yesterday evening, when it developed a fault which I found
rather worrying.
Using at half volume on the Magnum 44` and boosted by a fuzz pedal – this was on max volume – and
EHX Germanium OD, the Magnum produced without warning a very loud
“tock, tock, tock” sound, a hard continuous pulse/knocking. I turned
the Magnum`s volume down/up to test and it continued (with some pot
scratchiness and slight fluctuation in the knocking sound). The LED of
the Magnum 44` pulsed on/off in time with the knocking.
I disconnected all pedals and went direct guitar > amp> cab, it
remained the same sound. I then disconnected all power chords and
reconnected. This temporarily resulted in normal operation, but as
soon as any pedals were again used to boost, the problem reoccured and
for the safety of the equipment I stopped using the 44`. I then used a
regular amp with the same pedalboard to normal effect.
I am deeply concerned that this may happen again and I wish to
understand as to why? It is a rather expensive purchase on my part and
I intend to rely on it solely, so I would very much appreciate some
advise regarding this problem.
I retested the Magnum 44` this evening and at bedroom level it appears
to be once again working. That is a relief, nether-the-less my concern
remains. Does anyone have any theories or facts that may shed some light on this?
(I have also emailed EHX directly this same query but thought I would see if anyone else had had the same problem occur). Thanks all.
It does sound like something within the power amp section in the 44 Magnum is damaged. As soon as it starts to dissipate some heat it starts to reset itself. This is not normal behavior. I believe your 44 needs to be repaired or exchanged for a new one.
