Home › Forums › Help/Technical Questions › Low wattage amp into 44 Magnum?
Hello
I am currently using a low wattage valve guitar amp (Laney L5 Studio) live which sounds great to my ears. I previously used a GH50L, but after two serious back operations, I am not so keen to be lifting it again, so something small is preferred. However, onstage I need a bit more volume, as 5 watts is not really cutting it against a loud drummer and bass player.
I was wondering what options there might be to get a bit more volume out of a low wattage amp. One idea I had was to run a 44 Magnum between the output of the amp head and the speaker cab, but I wondered how safe this would be from a power/electricity point of view. The L5 actually has lots of outputs (including one for 0.5 watts, one for 5 watts, an XLR DI out and more).
Does anyone have any info on what sort of Ohm to watts I should use if I am to attempt something like this? I obviously don’t want to blow the amp head or the 44 Magnum and want to make sure what I am doing is safe to use.
Thanks!
Adam
DONT DO IT!
You need a direct box to take your amps output and convert it to a line level signal.
Then you feed that to the Mag amp.
Thanks for your suggestions, but I think the plot thickens..
This amp has a fully balanced output at the back with a ground lift switch. According to the manual, it is sourced from the post output section and can be used with or without a speaker load.

If I was to run from the DI into another power amp and then into a speaker cab, am I going to cause any problems or damage?
Am I right in thinking that 4×12 / 2×12 speaker cabs are set to run at a certain omh and will therefore not like the double amplified DI signal going in? And crucially, is it likely to sound awful if I do this?
If this will not work – any other suggestions for supercharging the little guy?
If it has a line out you are fine.
Just dont put a straight speaker out to the input of the 44.
