I recently inherited a Russian-made Big Muff from a friend who was moving. It’s sat around in his basement for quite some time. When I plugged it in between my Fender American Standard strat and a ’75 Fender Bassman, almost all the volume got cut. Where normally one could not sit next to the speaker cabinet (Marshall 1960A) w/o discomfort from the volume, one could quite easily have one’s ear next to a speaker. Sadly, the pedal sounds GREAT but 90% of the volume is cut. It’s definitely the Big Muff as other pedals work fine.
Is it just a bad pot? Turning the volume knob definitely does have an effect on the sound that I can hear, but not that much.
Thanks!
Stilts.
If the volume will go all the way off, it’s probably OK. Is there a noticeable change in sound with the Sustain/Distortion control?
Yes, the Sustain and the Tone knobs also change the sound.
I suppose it’s possible tat dampness from the basement has caused a problem in the circuit. If you’re knowledgeable about electronics, you could signal trace through the circuit.
I’m not that knowledgeable, but a friend of mine is. I can change a pot and solder, but that’s about it. I’ll pass it over to him and let him deal with it
Thanks for the help!
I have a similar problem with my Russian Big Muff.
Did you ever figure out the problem?
