Having just re-discovered a seriously-modded vintage Memory Man I used to use, and which sports five LEDs altogether (!), it struck me that it would be interesting to see what we all think about LEDs and their usefulness…
June 29, 2009 at 4:47 pm #98589julianModeratorI need to put an LED in my frequency analyzer.
I think LEDs could even be used in new ways to help things. I’d like LEDs above each knob that get brighter as each knob is turned up. And then when a preset is recalled, it will help you know where the controls are.
June 29, 2009 at 6:50 pm #98597BlueSteelParticipantI like the LED’s on my pedals, i think it’s helpful, but not completely nescessary. i wish EHX would make different color led’s for some pedals instead of just red, like purple or blue, or green.
As for vintage pedals like my phase 100, i would never put an led on it because it will decrease the value of it.
June 30, 2009 at 12:55 am #98619WatsonWoodMemberYes, the value aspect has taken on importance nowadays for vintage EHX pedals, as it has for vintage guitars, but even today I still mod my gear, including ny Electravibe and guitars, whenever I feel it will help with the sound and/or performance I am looking for. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but the music aspect always takes priority.
….colour-wise I like red, green and amber LEDs. I also find blue LEDs turn me off (!) for some reason, though I can’t imagine why.June 30, 2009 at 3:45 am #98624julianModeratorI like blue

Maybe it has something to do with my eyes and the fact that I once had a close call with two powerfull stage projectors, with light blue filters on them, which made me blind for a couple of minutes and left me with a few dark specks in each eye. No big deal but it could be that explains my aversion. I suppose I think they are going to jump up at me!
One thing is certain. LEDs are useful and, as long as their use does not put too much of a load on the circuit, should be integrated as much as possible to make pedals user-friendly.June 30, 2009 at 3:18 pm #98638julianModeratorblue lights usually are brighter, so that could be it
July 3, 2009 at 12:57 am #98804Ned FlandersModeratorNeither of the options.
On vintage EHX I dont install LEDs because that would ruin the aesthetics of it.
On modern pedals they have them so its fine.I dont need LED on my pedals but if they have them thats fine too, its a non issue to me really.
July 12, 2009 at 8:05 pm #99265m0joMemberI need leds, to keep track of what’s going on and .. which pedal is on.
Only problem is I’m red/green colourblind, so the standard red leds are useless to me in most conditions. I’ve modded some of my pedals with blue leds or higher brightness so that I can see clearly which is which.
Also I just love lights, as long as there are not too many blinking ones .. I don’t want my board to look like a festival attraction.
