I payed too much (for a 90’s Green Sovtek muff anyways, not really vintage but people class them so for some reason) but considering most ebay sellers that sell 2nd hand effects wont send ’em to Australia and this one did, I thought what the hell. LOL.
Also I have a deluxe big muff lined up too.
Gotta love teh muff! :thumb:

Let’s keep talking about the Deluxe Big Muff Pi.
Which one did you buy? The one with the Blend switch? or the Parallel/Series switch?
I haven’t used mine for a couple of months now, but I really love it. It sounds awesome. I’ve just been using my Ronsound modded BMP lately instead.

December 17, 2008 at 9:07 pm #89142Ned FlandersModeratorJust scored another big muff on eBay, its a 80’s 3034 transistor version with tone bypass. Now that I’ve spent all the money in my big muff fund I wont be buying anymore for quite some time. I’ve bought 3 in 2 days so that aught to cure teh Big Muff GAS for a while.LOL

Can I ask how much that cost? I have one of those in a drawer with the switch hanging off that I haven’t gotten around to fixing yet…maybe I should dig it out. Use a Lamb’s/Ram’s Head v2 3003 (FS36999) mostly, but also a v3 3003 w/ BC239C.
December 21, 2008 at 8:24 pm #89380Ned FlandersModeratorI got it for $140 on eBay BIN price.

(I still kick myself periodically for throwing away a “crappy old” triangle big muff in the 80s…doh!)December 21, 2008 at 10:01 pm #89388Ned FlandersModeratorYeah, early 80’s are considered vintage. hell, even early 90’s sovtek muffs are considered vintage. The thing about the sovtek muffs are they aren’t re issues because mike never had the originals made under the sovtek name or in russia. So the sovtek muffs realy aught to be classed as early and current, the early ones definitely look cool, that’s why I just bought an early 90’s sovtek muff, I wanted it for my collection and the ridiculous thing is that I payed 3 times as much for a 90’s sovtek muff then for my 78 big muff! Sovtek muffs demand a higher price than some 70’s vintage muffs because there’s an immense amount of hype built up around them. The only difference between an early 90’s green sovtek muff and a current black one is three components values differ ever so slightly, that’s it other than that they are identical inside. Its always amazed my how a lack of knowledge always seems to lead to a “better product” among the masses.
If I wasn’t a fanatical big muff collector I would never pay over $300 for a 90’s sovtek muff, another $100 or so can get you a v2/v3 ramshead muff!I’ve just contributed to prices staying high on sovtek muffs because I payed the asking price, all those that pay the price drive the prices up even more, sad but true.
Its funny because in the 90’s sovtek muffs were considered the lesser of the muffs, the cheap alternative to the NYC models, now they are like god himself!I have a 2000 black sovtek muff, the last one before the current style enclosure, and with the mods I’ve done to it it is seriously one of the best sounding muffs I’ve ever heard, you wouldn’t convince all the posters on the interwebs of this fact though because it has zero mojo compared to a v1/v2/v3/green russian etc. Mojo and hype play more of a role in the success of a product than the actual sound of the thing does!

Although I did just get a v3 3003 for $150! (to go with my v2, which cost double that). The 3034 I’ve always thought of as just a piece of 80s junk, which is why it’s sitting awaiting a repair…I need to start paying more attention. So far the v2 3003 is the nicest one I’ve heard.
December 21, 2008 at 11:00 pm #89400Ned FlandersModerator$50? wow, you wont get them at that price today. I put together a simple mod so that people with a $50 black muff can mod it to green muff specs for 30cents. Its starting to become popular on the web.
Big Muff, piece of junk? NEVER! The 3034 is known as one of the best muffs around. The 3003 is nice too but it has more hype built around it. Evidence of this is the fact that the 3003 circuit is available in the NYC enclosure yet it sells for less that the 3003 in the ramshead enclosure. You know the current issue muff, IMO in 20 years or so it will be bound to be a classic.
From EH mans site:
The Big Muff: The Crucial Differences
Version 1 EH-3003, the “Triangle-Knob” version Early 70’s to 1975
Version 2 EH-3003, the “Face Model” 1975 to 1977
Version 3 EH-3003, the “Face Model” in new red/black graphics w/ ON/OFF switch. All units from here on use Version 3 graphics 1977
Version 4 EH-3003/EH-1322, the first op-amp version w/ ON/OFF power switch 1977 to 1978
Version 5 EH-1322/EH-3003, op-amp version w/ TONE BYPASS switch 1978 to 1980
Version 6 EH-3003/EH-3034. Changed back to transistor circuit w/ TONE BYPASS switch 1980 to 1983The opamp version is one of the best sounding and most underrated muffs too IMO, its slightly crunchy, not as mid scooped and cuts through really well. Its tone bypass is excellent as is the tone bypass on the 3034, it really makes them cut through, it give sit flat mids thats why.
As far as sovtek muffs go, I would like to get the blue and the gold muffs, also I’d like a Mike Matthews red army overdrive, also the first black one.

srry for not telling you earlier but did you know that absolutely analog makes a green sovtek big muff clone for about $200 unless yours was more cheap then this one kicks ass!!! sounds just like my actual one…. without the huge body so it’s not a space taker on your pedalboard I would recommend it incase your green big muff breaks down… like it ever will!
December 22, 2008 at 8:05 pm #89493Ned FlandersModeratorI’d much rather original muffs than clones, I also like the big enclosures. I’ve never been into clones when you can have the real thing for less (usually). Besides, I’ve already modded my black russian big muff into a green russian big muff, cost me 30 cents and took 20 minutes but this cant compare to owning an original first version green sovtek muff. If any of my muffs break I’ll just fix them, they are a simple circuit and not much can go wrong. The switches in the sovtek muffs go eventually but I can get exact replacements for them.
December 28, 2008 at 10:57 pm #89769TheFloydGiverMemberoh well then never mind.
December 28, 2008 at 11:12 pm #89771Ned FlandersModeratorDo you own one of the clones you recommended me?
