Hey folks, I hoping that I can explain this question correctly so that you know what I’m after.
I’m sure that this effect I’m trying to find has a very simple name but as I do not know the term…What I’d like to do is to play a chord and have it swell-up and sustain as I pick a melody over it and then as I play a new chord, it will cancel out the first chord and the new chord will swell-up and sustain as I pick over it. Like David Gilmour does (with a volume pedal?) on his “In Concert” DVD in the intro to “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”.
So there it is. Is there one pedal that does this?
If not, why not ?
I do hope that I do not have to buy a truck load of pedals to do this one effect. Thanks for your help

Although I’ve done a similar sounding ting with a DMM if set right with the feedback on the edge of running away from itself it will build.
Failing that, you want a looper.December 3, 2009 at 4:51 am #104719electro-melxModerator“What I’d like to do is to play a chord and have it swell-up and sustain as I pick a melody over it and then as I play a new chord”
sounds like you’d need a delay pedal and a volume pedal to do the gilmour thing… maybe?
I think the HOG can do something like this too.
actually you can do a ‘fade in’ type effect with the Hazari too.
December 3, 2009 at 2:04 pm #104755KitraeMemberIt’s called sound-on-sound, and you need a delay with a separate 100% wet output jack and a volume pedal.
Gilmour had a 1500ms delay with repeats set for about 20 seconds on his Roland SDE 3000, going into a volume pedal. The repeats from the delay (100% wet, nothing but the delayed signal) went to a separate Fender amp. The non delayed signal went to another amp so David could play the melody stuff over the sustained chords in the delay loop.
Gilmour plays a chord, swells the volume pedal up for a second or two to get the repeats going, then back to zero to play the solo stuff over that looped chord.
There are a lot of delays that do 100% wet. I think the Deluxe Memory Man does it, and most boss delays do it. By 100% wet, I mean there is a separate output for just the delayed signal with no dry signal at all, so all you hear is the echo through that jack.
You could send both both the dry signal and the wet back to the same amp if you had one with two inputs, or you could send the wet signal out in a loop, then then mix both the dry and the wet signals back together with a mix pedal just before they hit the amp.

Failing that, you want a looper. There is a cheap alternative to the Boss Slow Gear called the Behringer Slo Motion (which a friend gave to me). You basically need an classic attack type pedal I think. Both the Micro Synth’s have this feature that do the swell and sustain but I’m not sure if you can pick over them like you want to.
December 3, 2009 at 7:33 pm #104770julianModeratoryou could do this with a HOG
For HOG, you’d have just the original slider up as well as the dry slider, and you’d have it set for a slow attack envelope and have the expression on freeze + volume.
Or you could do the delay thing

agree’d on the HOG. The sg-1 does something different, or at least not what this guy wants (as far as I have understood)
December 4, 2009 at 3:29 am #104791Mr.GrimMembera cheaper than the HOG option would be the Cathedral pedal from EHX. i dont think its exactly what your looking for but it can do a very cool similar effect. look up demos on Youtube, there’s an infinite reverb option when holding one of the foot switches. im sure if you combine this effect with a volume control it will sound like what your looking for.
December 4, 2009 at 5:29 am #104795julianModeratoronly thing is with the cathedral you can’t swell the held chord.

or am i missing something here? :worried:
December 4, 2009 at 9:26 am #104802cabomanoParticipantHaz in loop mode: pick chord -> swell w/ guitar volume knob -> record loop when the chord is up at full volume -> play lead over the loop.

well it depends on if he wants it to swell while he plays over it or swell before he plays over it
December 31, 2009 at 4:02 am #105916Ditch GatorMemberGreat info folks.
Kit Rae…I think you’ve hit it right on the head.
There is a cat on youtube (name is tubescreamer) that has it down as well. He has some really nice “atmospheric” music going on.
Funny you should have answered my question here as I have just read about you at youtube while looking for a certain effect pedal from Skreddy! Too cool.
Am I correct that you also know of the guitar brand called “Vintage”, or am I wrong about that?Again, thanks for the help.
