Hi, I was lucky enough to be given a 3 knob memory man about 20 years ago and never used it, mainly because I am a philistine so therefore should be stoned – with stones….
I decided that someone else should have the benefit of this unit so I put it on ebay and sold it. The guy who bought it complained that it was hissing and too noisy and returned it saying it was un-useable. It is quite noisy but I just put that down to it being 30+ years old and using BBD chips and I have nothing to compare it with. I do think it sounds great and I don’t notice the hiss when actually playing. Mucking about with the knobs doesn’t make much difference to the hissing.
So onto the question, just how noisy were these units and how noisy should I expect it to be?
The unit I have looks like it has been modded with a few resistors and caps soldered onto the back of the circuit board but I have no idea what for?
Essentially I am looking to resell this as it is just a waste me having it so I want it to go to a good home and more importantly I want it to go in a working state so the buyer will be 100% happy with it.
I am an electronics engineer so I would be happy if anyone has any suggestions where to start to diagnose and fix the hissing.
Many thanks,
It depends on which version it is. The older units that used the SAD1024 delay ICs are noisier than the later MN3005 versions.
As for the parts on the back, that was likely done at EH at the time of manufacture.
