hi just bought this pedal this week.
it is fantastic and has transformed my guitars tone into my solid state amp. huge distortion which i found a little too much and ramped up very quickly when the controls where turned up. i replaced the 12ax7 with 12ay7 and now have a hugely adjustable sound curve from warm cleanish tones throughout to nice blues rock overdrive.
i love this range of pedals…well done EHX
Cool idea putting 12ay7’s in there! I might have to do that.
I love my Hot Tubes, I use it as a bass pre-amp, with the distortion turned al the way down and the gain at like 9 o’clock. Gives it all little bit of tube dirt without losing articulation/clarity.
12ay7’s may give me more usable sounds…
Hi dude ,thanks! I found when I put them in and turned on I thought I had broken it but it’s just you have to turn the output up much higher lol
I have a selection of tubes and will be trying them all and posting some comparison vids .from what I have heard the following is a kinda gain guide to the tubes commonly available:
12ax7 -100 gain
12at7 – 50
12ay7 – 36
12au7 – 16
You could have fun exploring different gain settings and consequently guitar sounds/tones by mixing and matching tubes.
I’m looking to get an English muf’n to run with the hot tubes so you could have two stages of overdrive from warmed up clean tones through to total crank when both engaged!!!
That’s very interesting. I was going to ask for videos but you already commited on doing them lol
I like the Hot Tubes but I have a feeling it could get better, perhaps that’s the way.
Yeah will be doing videos shortly! I have the tube eq – hot tubes – lpb 2ubes split into two amps for kind of stereo effect. Playing with the tube types is fun and you can Taylor the amount of overdrive you want but running the tube eq before realy allows sculpting of tone .
Next on the list is a tube zipper
I also intend to go full tube with a vox ac4tv and bugera v5 replacing my two solid states
I guess I’m just a tube-aholic lol
Thanks to EHX for making me see the light and go tonal!!!
Tube Zipper is an unreal pedal.
I’m using mine with my fretless bass and it’s just exactly what I’ve always wanted from an envelope filter.
Umm…. bump?
