So, I got swindled on craigslist and ended up with a non-funcioning Holy Grail. When bypassed, everything was fine. Activate the pedal, and all you get is HUM! no signal at all, just hum.
I open it up, and I notice that the solder around the large resistor (R1) looks burnt. The circuit is labeled as Revision C, and the resistor has color bands green brown gold gold (5.1 ohm 5%). The closes part I have is a 10 ohm resistor. I popped it in, but it still is humming.
So, having a bit of a background in circuit bending, I just shorted past the resistor. No Hum!! In fact I’ve got reverb too!
SO, what should I do to fix this? If I put another 5.1 ohm resistor in there, will it still hum? If I just skip the resistor, will I risk frying the pedal in the long run?
I only know enough to get myself into trouble, so I appreciate any advice. I hope I’ve given you enough info.
The 5.1 resistor is a current in-rush limiter. It needs to be in there. That’s a very common problem with Holy Grails. If you can’t get the proper replacement you can solder a standard resistor in place of the SMD one. It needs to be 1W.
Okay, except the faulty part in there is not SMD, it is through hole. Does this indicate that it has already been repaired before? Or is this an old version? I can take photos if that will be helpful.
They must have changed it at some point.
yosh, i’d ruined (as i thought that time) my pedal by using wrong adaptor. and the thing is to solder 1 om resistor in position R1. pedal is working great, while few days ago the led did not even turn on.
