I have recently purchased a Holy Grail Plus pedal here in the uk. I love the sound of the pedal but I’m having a problem. I run a system that uses several pedals in the effects loops of a Pro 14 Gigrig which also powers all of my pedals via it’s generator/distributor product. The problem is that when power is sent to the Holy Grail I get a high pitched (about an E) whine coming through my amp. The moment I disconnect the power to the Holy Grail Plus it disappears. If I use the Electro Harmonix PSU I get a mains hum that’s a lot lower in pitch but noisy nonetheless. All my other pedals are fine (Keeley compressor, Keeley modded Boss SD1 and Boss CE2, Boss BF 2, Crybaby Wah, Fulltone Super Trem) being powered from the Gigrig. Is my pedal faulty or is the pedal just incompatible with my rig. Any suggestions?

January 27, 2009 at 1:54 am #91950julianModeratorThe digital pedals- Holy Grail +, SMMH, etc. will whine like that if they’re sharing power with a few other pedals. That’s why I use a Pedal Power 2+, it eliminates that problem because the power outlets are isolated (hopefully isolated outputs will be standard someday!)
When you use the provided power supply, where is it physically located in relation to your other gear?
I have a feeling the mains hum is because the crybaby is a little too close to it. The inductor doesn’t like to be near transformers. Or vice versa. Electromagnetic fields and such.
If it’s not that maybe you’ve got some grounding issues, I don’t think it is incompatible with your rig.
January 27, 2009 at 10:59 am #91970Mikey GMemberThank you for that. I was under the impression that the outputs from the gigrig distributor were isolated but obviously not!!! I’ll try with the transformer further away from my board but I was hoping to power everything off one thing just for speed and efficiency. Anyway, I’ll experiment.

January 27, 2009 at 11:59 am #91973Mikey GMemberI’ve just ordered a virtual battery from gigrig which will isolate the power supply to the Holy Grail while still running all the pedals off the Generator. Hopefully this will sort it out. Thanks for the advice guys, I’ll keep you posted.

February 16, 2009 at 9:42 pm #93381mr. BerggrafMemberDid the virtual battery solve the problem?
I have the same problem
and would like to hear how it worked out.February 16, 2009 at 11:33 pm #93390Mikey GMemberDaniel at Gigrig is modding one for me to make sure the Holy Grail Plus gets the full 180ma it needs. As soon as I have it and try it out I’ll let you know but he seems pretty confident it’ll sort it.
February 23, 2009 at 3:18 pm #93849mr. BerggrafMemberI got an e-mail from EHX and they said it need at least 280mA.
February 23, 2009 at 6:44 pm #93855Mikey GMemberWell in the manual it says 200ma and the adaptor that comes with it only supplies 200ma. I still haven’t got the virtual battery yet so I’ll keep you posted.
April 9, 2009 at 5:09 pm #95485Mikey GMemberDaniel at Gigrig wired 2 virtual batteries together for me to handle the power the Holy Grail + needs and it’s all working great, no hum at all. Not the cheapest option probably but it sounds great now!!!
