here we go …
https://www.ehx.com/products/hog2
New digital foot controller with 100 presets instead of six, and the ability to save volume levels. I honestly could use like 8, so I’m not regretting buying the HOG right before it got discontinued.
But if the heir to the 2880 let’s you save 100 loops, there will be one night of therapy with Dr. Maker’s Mark.
January 11, 2013 at 5:37 pm #118641MattInVegasMemberGreat demo, Bill.
January 11, 2013 at 8:58 pm #118642julianModeratorCan the HOG2 foot controller be used with the HOG1? Or do I have to upgrade?
January 12, 2013 at 3:38 am #118644MattInVegasMemberthat … would be nice
even if it doesn’t save volume levels
January 12, 2013 at 5:39 pm #118646pbmemberMemberI love the original HOG. I’m intrigued by the HOG 2, but have some reservations.
The orginal HOG used a 9VDC/500mA AC adapter the new one uses a 9.6DC-200BI power supply (same as used by Boss® & Ibanez®: 9.6 Volts DC 200mA). This concerns me. Will the HOG 2 suffer from the lack of power as some of the other reissues have.
I don’t want to sell my original HOG for a HOG 2 only to find that the original sounds better.
I guess the new foot controller isn’t compatible with the original HOG, however the original controller is compatible with the HOG 2.
I wish the new controller was compatible with the orginal.
A smaller foot print would have been nice.
January 12, 2013 at 11:27 pm #118651julianModeratorSmaller footprint would have meant they’d have to cut back on features or make it more difficult to use (hidden knob functions are a pain in the butt!)
I might get one at some point but keep my old HOG. I’ve wanted to have two anyways.
The midi CC options give DIYers like myself a lot of flexibility.
January 13, 2013 at 3:32 am #118652MattInVegasMemberWhich other reissues have suffered from lack of power?
And can someone please hook Julian up with a demo model so we can get the side-by-side comparison?
January 13, 2013 at 10:53 pm #118656Mr. ORANGEMemberFINALLY ! I am so glad EHX are going MIDI – it was the only drawback of the original HOG – lack of MIDI control and just a few presets – now everything changes and I’m saving up money…Please make Hazarai with MIDI control and at like 50 presets too so I don’t have to betray EHX and go for Strymon !
THX for going this way…Professionals are throwing their Eventide Harmonizer rack stuff into garbage right now… EHX ! ! !January 14, 2013 at 2:30 am #118657julianModeratorThe midi CC table in the manual. It gives me ideas.
Few things:
With MIDI you can mix expression modes to a bit. There’s CCs for master volume, expression, freeze gliss, and filter. Also CCs for the individual voices you could do some really cool things.
Wonder what if it will cost the same as the original.
January 14, 2013 at 8:55 am #118660diegoartsMemberit says in the youtube vid, that the new footcontroller pedal could not be used with the HOG(1)?!
if this is true, i really am very disappointed, as EHX tells us this way, that they don’t care much for older pedals – i mean, the HOG2 may be better tracking and have midi implementation, but for what it does, it’s exactly the same as the first HOG, which still is a groundbreaking pedal i use all the time.
as far as i can tell, the idea for a “hazarai-like” presetpedal came out of the forum, so it’s a bit sad, that this pedal now evolves but is not compatible with the original HOG pedal.
i really am a great fan of ehx products, but this was not very well done – if it’s true that the preset pedal could not be used with older pedals, especially the HOG (1).
will there be a version, that will be universally working with older pedals with presets (HOG1, 2880)?!
i really do hope so.
what we people really needed i think was a footcontroller that was smaller than the 6-switch monster. for me 6 or maybe 10 presets would have been enough, but the old controller is nearly as big as the HOG itself.
still hoping.
best regards
diego
January 15, 2013 at 9:46 pm #118666MattInVegasMemberwell, I’m not seeing HOG2 prices on ebay or a rush to sell HOGs yet. I like the old pedals, but I think that a personal preference. I never really use more than one preset in a song or soundscape, and I take photos of presets I don’t want to forget. One thing to remember — the preset does not slide the bars for you. Once you save it, you still need to diagram the setting if you want to remember how you found it.
I’ve had mine for a year, and am getting better at intuitively knowing how to find a sound, or what an adjustment will do. I’ve had a cello, bass, two organs and a 12-string saved just about that whole time, and the remaining one is a floater set to flute right now.
To me, it looked like Bill R. had a better organ sound in Effectology than I can achieve. The organ presets from the manual sound great better on the high strings (esp chords) than on the lower strings on my HOG.
But once you master portamento with the freeze expression setting there is nothing like it. Love the HOG.
January 16, 2013 at 12:01 pm #118669Mr. ORANGEMemberWell, I was just like that couple of years ago – I was laughing at MIDI pedals and presets…But then I started singing and being a frontman singer/guitarist (+occasional pianist) forces you to stop doing tap dance and stop changing settings before every song manually, because you need to communicate with people, do a show and not be bend over your pedalboard…So I had two options – go presets/MIDI or not to have so many effects and settings – I like different sounds so I decided to go MIDI (buying Midi controller and switcher for my pedals, MIDI controlled Whammy)- it’s expensive and it has it’s problems but it saved me from tap dancing and I can focus on singing and playing…So it’s not about being lazy but changing one setting on HOG would take like 10 seconds and I don’t have time for that…I use Memory Man and Fuzz Factory too, so I change settings anyway…
To HOG2 – It looks awesome – I dig that cello sound ! But I think they couldn’t make the same preset pedal to work with the original Hog – it’s different, right ? The HOG2 controller is software based and the HOG controller is hardware based I think…
January 17, 2013 at 4:11 am #118676MattInVegasMemberI just worked out an arrangement of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with organ and 12-string presets, a DMM and a Small Stone that could only be done right live with all-in-one, so I hear you. I don’t spite MIDI for guitar; just ain’t had to go there yet.
January 17, 2013 at 6:07 am #118677julianModeratorThat’s really not what MIDI’s about. All-in-ones have their own preset switches built in and really don’t need midi communication. MIDI is more for getting multiple parts to work in harmony as well as expanding the control over your instruments.
MIDI’s just a communication protocol, much like the earlier control voltage & gate system used by many analog synths and used to this day in many pedals (including most EH pedals with expression jack which take 0-5v CV)
With MIDI you can turn bypass loops, A/B switchers, pedals, etc. on or off remotely & you can change their presets, as well as change your midi controller’s expression preset.
MIDI allows you to do with a full rig with 20-30 different parts what you could do with an all in one: turning effects on or off simultaneously.
Let’s say for a moment that you’re doing a song with your board & you want 3 very specific pedal combos to be on for each section:
Verse: soul preacher, HOG organ preset, small stone
Chorus: soul preacher, HOG 12 string preset, DMM
Lead: Big MuffWith the proper MIDI equipment you could switch between those combinations seamlessly with one stomp, rather than tap-dancing. It’s sort of like Sauron’s ring really. One ring to rule them all.
Also, since you have a 2880. . . if you had a drum machine- you could sync the two so they’re perfectly quantized and locked in rhythm with each other. AND with a MIDI set-up on different presets you could change between having your MIDI expression pedal controlling something on your HOG to controlling something on your 2880: like tempo for tape speed up/slow down (possible via MIDI CCs on the 2880)
Which brings me to my next point: CCs open up a device to pretty much anything you want to do.
For example, VIA the HOG 2’s CCs: You could freeze a chord, then bend it, then filter sweep it. Or bend & filter sweep it simultaneously.
Or via the HOG’s CCs, you could program a midi expression pedal to switch direction mid sweep so you can do 2 octave or 2 step bends.
Or you could program movement to the voice sliders, so you could have a sound where you have tremolo on one voice but not on another.
You could make expression settings where the voice changes gradually throughout the sweep of your expression pedal. Maybe at toe down you’ve got your 12 string sound, and a heel down you’ve got your organ sound.
On the simpler side, you could use midi just to give yourself a few extra footswitch. A spectral gate, expression mode, and a latching freeze footswitch for example.
It’s all about what you can dream up.
January 17, 2013 at 6:32 am #118678MattInVegasMemberYeah, I’m a little lost there. Have not penetrated the midi capabilities of gear I have (Logic, firewire interface, keyboard controller, 2880). Will just have to pick a day and immerse.
