I think it’s a neat quick show of the range of deep synth sounds you can get from the HOG.

every time there’s a HOG video and it demos that i cry a little inside that it doesn’t exist yet…

I agree! A pedal with just that effect would be surely a best seller!
May 12, 2009 at 11:56 am #96617WatsonWoodMemberOnce again Dan Miller does a great demo! I love the way he always gets straight to the point and highlights the essential features of any EHX pedal he demonstrates.
…and I join nightraven and Dreamhunter in their request for a freeze pedal. Why not call it the Icebox? (The Freezer seems too obvious to be an EHX pedal name).
The Icebox would deliver the Hog’s freeze / gliss portamento as a unique feature of a simplified and less expensive pedal. And I cannot resist saying that a re-issue of the Crying Tone series would provide the perfect casing with integrated treadle for this effect!!!!

My suggestion here:
https://www.ehx.com/forums/viewthread/15/P105/#5646
I’d love an individual freeze pedal but there are two things I’ve always wanted to do with my HOG:
1. Do pitch bends on a frozen chord or note
2. Freeze an effected note then fade it out with the effect while playing clean (or with another effect) over it.May 12, 2009 at 3:12 pm #96625nightravenMemberi think i posted a thread in the suggestions forum about making a portamento pedal but i don’t think it went that well haha.
the only alternative for those that can’t afford the HOG is going to have to be one of the digitech PDS delays with the ‘echo hold’ function. or one of the old rackmount delays that had that (roland, digitech and A/DA spring to mind…). it’s not the same as totally freezing it but it’s still an awesome effect.
now if only EHX had that as well haha
Quote:2. Freeze an effected note then fade it out with the effect while playing clean (or with another effect) over it.i’m still thinking of an intricate setup with the ‘echo hold’ thing where it’ll be coming out of my signal chain at an angle and then jumping back in through a mixer, so putting a volume pedal after the echo hold toy and before the mixer would let it fade out, which’d be awesome. i’m thinking of doing something like that with my alesis reverb as well, to do massive reverb swells ‘a la’ my bloody valentine
May 12, 2009 at 6:25 pm #96628WatsonWoodMemberWell, Julian, No.1 of your points should not be too difficult using an expression pedal which is why I suggested integrating the “Icebox” into a Crying Tone housing format. The Crying Tone format gives one a treadle for foot control, room on each side of the pedal for set-up knobs and room at the front of the treadle for two foot switches for mode selection.
(I so wish that all the staff at EHX would jump to the idea of a Crying Tone format series …the possibilities seem almost endless….I mean, imagine having a selection of 6 effect pedals lined up one after the other, each offering the great EHX sound and each one fully foot controllable…wow!!)
As for your suggestion No.2 we seem to be moving into the realms of feedback/looper pedals or looping set-ups which are possible either in pedal form or through the use of mixing tables, as I am sure many of us have already done or at least experimented with.
And here is another example which I believe I suggested somewhere before, which is a Crying Tone format pedal (called the Eternal Circle?) dedicated to an effect loop set-up with the treadle controlling re-injection of the effect(s) signal from zero to maximum frenzy, one foot switch in front of the treadle turning the “Eternal Circle” on and off while the second foot switch placed beside it gives the momentary effect mode…this can go on …..)
The idea of a “simplified” pedal does somewhat restrict things to the freeze and the gliss / portamento modes (which would be controlled by the foot switches to the front of the treadle in the case of a Crying Tone format).
So far we do all appear to agree on the principle that two (or three) function pedals, as opposed to super multi-function ones, are an advantage to the player and I believe this philosophy is the core strength of EHX, viz. Big Muff, Small Stone, Slap Back, Small Clone, Doctor Q, Bass Balls, Frequency Analyzer, Knock Out Attack Equalizer, Octave Multiplexer, Memory Man etc.

The Ice Box was the name of a really really sub-par stereo chorus DOD made, it is now a doorstop in my living room 😆
I couldn’t agree more though that a freeze pedal is needed.
I’d certainly buy one,
it could be called The Fridge or The Ice Cap :thumb:May 13, 2009 at 4:31 pm #96657julianModeratorQuote:Well, Julian, No.1 of your points should not be too difficult using an expression pedal which is why I suggested integrating the “Icebox” into a Crying Tone housing format. I personally prefer expression pedal inputs to pedals being built in wah enclosures. That way you can use CV if you like as well, and expression pedals are generally smaller, so it might be easier to place two smaller pedals on your board than one big one. I know for me it would. Also, for me I don’t find expression pedals difficult to use. Just plug it in and go.
A simple dry/wet mix pedal would be cool. I sort of have a volume pedal doing that chore on my current board. I use the bypass out on my tuner to my SMMH to a volume pedal to the 2nd channel on my amp, so that I can fade in and out delay sounds or loops. Also when I activate the tuner pedal it cuts out the dry signal completely, but since the SMMH is hooked to the bypass, I can get 100% wet that way.
But anyways, the main thing to me is to integrate that kind of stuff into a freeze mode, so that I could cross fade actual riffs and progressions with different effects, not just crossfade effects like a simple wet/dry mix pedal would do. Hit the last note of a fuzz riff, hold that note and fade it out naturally while you start playing over it clean. Then do the same thing with a clean chord ringing out at the end of a clean riff.
The other thing about an effects loop on a freeze pedal is that I’d be able to freeze notes then add additional effects on top. How cool would it be to have a frozen chord sent through a sample and hold while the rest is unaffected?
May 15, 2009 at 1:15 pm #96731WatsonWoodMemberOK, PabloEire, I get the message. No sub-par pedals! I like The Fridge, good name. How about The Freezer?
Julian, great ideas, as always! Inventive sounds lead the way to creativity, no doubt about that. I will try and work out if The Fridge / Freezer(?) is indeed a practical project for us mortals.May 16, 2009 at 12:54 pm #96753PabloMemberQuote:OK, PabloEire, I get the message. No sub-par pedals! Please do, I’d love for something like this to be feisable for production.
The Freezer…nice :thumb:May 25, 2009 at 4:02 am #96997jubbMemberOh my…. the Hog is amazing.
