Hi guys – just recently bought my HOG and whilst I’m really enjoying it, I can’t help but feel that the bypassed signal is slightly strange. I feel like some of the attack is lost, my actual notes are coming through slightly slower, a slightly duller tone also seems to be coming through. I am not sure if this is just my imagination or what. It first occurred to me whilst using the pedal at home, but tonight I used it at band practice and my bassist also agreed that the signal with the HOG in my signal chain, but bypassed was nowhere near as ‘good’ sounding as when it wasn’t in the chain at all.

Has anyone else had these problems? Btw, I am powering with a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2. I would really appreciate some help as this is a really fantastic pedal, but the way it seems to be ‘sucking’ my tone when bypassed is kinda irratating me. EHX claim that it’s ‘true bypass’ so it seems strange that I should be having these problems. I don’t really wanna have to shell out for a TB loop to put it in but it seems like that’s what I might have to do.

Hmmm Loobs I don’t know what to say. I’ve never had that problem with mine, but different set ups and different sets of ears come into play. If it sounds better in a TB loop to you, you gotta do what your ears tell you.

Try running it off of the EHX power supply. In my experience, it’s always best to use the supplied adapter – it’s in there for a reason. Digital pedals are sometimes finnicky that way, particularly EHX boxes.

The other thing you might want to check out is whether or not your signal is just dying through the added cables. I HAVE had a similar problem, when I tried keeping the HOG on a small table. I was using a total of four long cables in my chain, and all of the added line absolutely decimated my dry tone – even with several buffered pedals in the chain. This setup never made it as far as band practice, and was pretty well the last time I ever strung together more than 5 pedals at a time. Here’s a quick checklist to run through for any bypass issues:

Are you using the shortest cables possible?
Are you running any pedals with buffered bypass or is your entire board true bypass?
Are you running it before any distortion/fuzz boxes which may require signal directly from the guitar?
Does the HOG cause problems even if it’s the only pedal in the chain?

Hopefully it helps, I’ve never had a problem with the HOG so long as I was using short cables so I’m interested to know what’s going on here.

I use the PP2+ with mine just fine.

Hi guys – thanks for the replies.

I am using it with short/good quality patch cables. Yesterday I was using it without my Tuner (Korg DT-10) in the chain and I didn’t notice the ‘lag’ at all…

Maybe I just need to experiment with pedals/order of pedals. I have a couple buffered Boss/Line 6 pedals in my chain too.

Hi, my name is Mariana, i’m from Brasil.
I got the same problem, my hog distorted the
sound of my guitar. I have tried many things,
and tried to talk with EHX too, but nobody help me.
They said that i’m not american, if i want a repair,
i have to pay the fix and the ship. Even covered by the warranty.
It’s an absurd! Now i got this U$ 500 loss. I am seling my other
pedals by EHX, it’s not a trust brand. I got other pedals(Dr Scientist,
Xotic, Barber, Eventide, Empress effecys, Mid-fi…)any problem that i have,
they solve. By the way, planet waves
gave me a PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner, they kept, analyze
and realize that got a problem. It’s all about ethic.
    Regards,
    Mariana.

Hi Mariana, sorry to hear you’re having that problem. I have taken my tuner out of my chain and now everything seems to be fine.

Does it distort your guitar when off, on, or both off and on?

Did you send in the warranty card right after buying the pedal?

Did you try talking to the store you bought it from?

Are you using the correct power supply?

Did you try turning down the input gain? (slider all the way on the left)

Did you try running the HOG all by itself?

    Did you try different cables?

Did you try lowering your pickups on your guitar? (having them too high can distort some buffers, and also is just unnecessary)

    Hi!
Yes, i’ve tried everything you said, i also
tried this unit by itself, all alone, no any other
device with it. I use evidence audio cables, the best
one. I’m a pro here in Brasil, i know what i’m doing.
When i first got in touch with EHX, i’ve still had the warranty,
and they denied repairing the unit. Now the warranty prize has
    expired. Again, my loss.
    Thanks,
    Mariana.

I forgot, i got humbuckers and single coils.
Both reacted exactly the same. Weather the unit is
on or off the sound distorts.
At the time, when i got in touch with EHX, they
didn’t even allow me nothing, no rights at all,
because i’m not an US citizen.

Right, firstly hang on…..I’m not a US citizen either, your ‘rights’ as a customer are not effected by where you live.

How did you get intouch with EHX, what did you say, who did you speak to and what did they say? if anyone can help we really need to know the whole story.

also, you would have rights as a consumer within your country that would be applicable I would imagine?
