Okay, well I have been thinking about trying to make some reproduction 90’s Russian Big muff knobs. Since they are impossible to get your hands on now. I have some experience with making plaster and rubber molds, and I work at a place where optical grade resin flows like water. I was wondering if anyone had one of the sought after plastic battery doors that I could make a mold of (and send back obviously, as these things are like gold.) I have a few knobs on my russian muffs for the knob mold but not a battery door.
any one interested?

February 16, 2010 at 12:32 am #107543Ned FlandersModeratorI have one battery door but i am to fearful too part with it even for this LMAO as they are extremely rare and should it go missing in the post I will be gutted!
I would be perfectly happy to make a mold myself if told how to do it, i am very intuitive and pickup real quick at all things DIY. SO the offer is there anyways.
Hopefully Ron can do something maybe…he’s a good guy that you can trust completely BTW!
I have thought about making the plastic doors myself actually as I need another two and I would actually like to have about 10-20 on hand for future Sovtek purchases. If someone doesn’t beat me to it i will eventually make some myself anyways. I know Kit also is interested in this as he has mention it to me previously.
February 16, 2010 at 2:15 am #107546julianModeratorthat’s a great idea!
I don’t have that style battery door, but best of luck to you!
February 16, 2010 at 5:51 am #107549KitraeMemberThere are actually two different sizes of the plastic battery door that fit the different Sontek cast aluminum enclosures, so you would have to decide which to make, or both. One won’t fit all the big box Sovteks. Probably the one that fit the early green Russians is more prevalent. Problem is, the damn things are so loose they would just fall out again. It would help if they were reengineered a bit.
I have both, so if Ron can’t help, let me know.
I’m interested in getting knobs if you plan on making plenty!

Yeah, even with the battery door i still need to use clear tape over it so they are pretty well useless.
I never knew about the two different sizes, what muffs the other size for,CW, RAOD???
February 17, 2010 at 5:43 am #107614devnulljpParticipantOh man you’re going to make some knobs too?
hint hint hint…

The second edition green Civil War Muffs changed to the new die cast box – the one with ridged sides, and got a new battery door to fit it. The first edition green Russians used this same box and door. One door was wider and longer than the other. Neither had much of a detente to hold them in place.
Here is the later one, from the green Russians.
And here is the earlier one from the RAO and Civil War Muffs. Some of these were red plastic.

The little latch needs to be thicker so it grabs hey…
May 3, 2010 at 6:33 pm #108428devnulljpParticipantHey did this project ever fly?
May 17, 2010 at 11:59 pm #109351devnulljpParticipantAny idea what a set of NOS triangle knobs (the black Dakawares) would be worth? I found a source, and need to make an offer…
May 18, 2010 at 2:09 am #109326The EH ManModeratorThey’re worth whatever you want to pay to have them. I wouldn’t pay more than $10-20.

Really I’m missing one of these but pretty much given up one ever finding one…June 7, 2010 at 9:22 pm #102505devnulljpParticipantI got some NOS triangle-ish knobs.
Close up, and under strong light, they’re almost tortoishell colour though instead of black. Look like they belong on nasty 70s furniture
I’d be in for a battery door though if these were ever made…
