Home › Forums › Help/Technical Questions › Flanger Hoax problem – distortion already at low levels
Hello, I just received my brand new Flanger Hoax, unfortunetely there seems to be a problem with my unit. I noticed a rough distortion in the effects out which only went away when lowering the source levels quite significantly. The dry signal/direct out does not distort though.
I checked with a 60hz and 1kHz test tone and my results were that distortion started at -1.7dbu at 60hz and at -8.8dBu at 1kHz.
Just to make sure I tested with both balanced and unbalanced cables and sources but no change.
I am using the original power adapter from EHX.
As this is supposed to be a line level unit I’m starting to think that my unit is defective.
Please advise.
Thanks
Best wishes from Stockholm
Lynn
It’s possible that someone tampered with the internal trimpots. That would definitely cause the unit to have lower output and distortion. Trying to recalibrate the trimpots on a Flanger Hoax can’t be much fun. I would probably send it back to the seller and ask them to send you a calibrated unit.
You can see the trimpots and their settings clearly at this site http://www.modezero.com/flanger-hoax.htm

Thanks for your quick reply, I agree – recalibrating this sounds like nightmare to me. I measured the wallwart output voltage in the meantime and it turns out instead of 18vdc it’s actually supplying 25vdc to the hoax. I guess that might be the reason for the distortion.
I wonder if this could have done any internal damage to the unit now?
