EHX, if you want to modify this pedal for future release, or if anyone else who is experienced with the new-style circuitry of XO pedals wants to help, I have a great modification suggestion for the Enigma / Riddle filter pedals.
Adding an expression pedal is an awesome feature, and adds to the usefulness and dimension of the Enigma/Riddle in leaps and bounds, but presents one problem. You would have to connect and disconnect the expression pedal in order to switch from manual expression to the pedal’s sweep. A small switch is needed to quickly bypass the expression pedal jack if you want to quickly return to normal mode (very similar to such switching on the Polyphase and Deluxe Memory Boy). Especially because filter pedals could be deep within a pedal board and switching the exp. jack in and out may not be easy.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to mod this with a regular ‘ol micro on/off switch (perhaps on the side of the enclosure, where there would be more room?) that would be much appreciated! I would eventually like to externalize the distortion trim pot too, if anyone has gotten that far.
The Enigma is easily the most versatile and great sounding filter I’ve ever played. I’m working on some sample settings for bass players to dig into when I get around to reviewing it here!

That’s – apart from missing an LFO for “Auto-Wah” settings – the only thing in the riddle that’s not perfect! And i guess it would’ve been pretty easy to imply!
as you said: see stereo polyphase!Hope, there’s an easy mod on that one!
cheers

I have an old keyboard exp pedal, tried to plug it into the enigma, but it doesn’t work, I guess it’s not the right impedance. Can anybody tell me what impedance is the original EH exp pedal? Can’t even find it on the EH site….November 29, 2010 at 1:53 pm #112805julianModeratorI think you need a 10kohm expression pedal.

An on/off for toggling manual and auto sweep is arguably the one thing left out of this pedal that would make it killer (or at least the regarding the exp. option). I’ve owned mine for maybe four years now and this theoretical exp. mod was the first thing I thought of when I first got it.
So, CHECK THIS OUT.. I recently opened mine up and removed the guts from the chassis (because I had to replace a pot). On the PCB, near the traces for the Start/Stop pots and the EXP jack, there is clearly marked a spot for a DPDT switch. It’s an empty spot, no switch installed. It is labeled ” SW 4 SPDT ” (it says SPDT, though there are six holes as a DPDT switch would have).
I wonder if they originally did intend to have a toggle option but instead designed the circuit to somehow recognize when something is in the EXP jack, and if/when so, override the Start/Stop settings and follow the input. Maybe it was a matter of price point (though I don’t know how one extra stomp switch and an LED or two would really break the bank)? Maybe they were already at the max point and had to cut something out somewhere.
Anyway.. I have not tried wiring a switch into the spot to see what it does, if anything. Mostly, I have not done it because I fear irreversible damage to the pedal. I emailed EHX support; they told me they cannot comment on anything mod-related or on schematics, not could they provide me schematics (I thought maybe there’d be like a note in it explains the SW 4 location).
I also sent some photos of the PCB top and bottom to companies who do aftermarket mods and no one got back to me.
Anyone brave enough to find out?…

However, I’m told that it uses an LM339 like quad differential comparator with a quad cmos switch as well as a plethera of opamps for good measure – a far cry from the average autowah so I would be inclined to leave well alone!!
