it would be cool if EH could invest in making tubes to the standard they used to be made at. i would happily pay twice as much for something that quality. adn they could pretty much corner the market as those NOS tubes aren’t gonna last forever.

this is a great link for 12ax7 comparison.

as you can see the ehx made valves fair very well even against military spec Jan tubes.
infact the Tung-sol come out on top for “Musical Detail and Dynamics”
I’m not saying you don’t prefer the sound of NOS valves, I’m sure you do and I won’t argue that, but I don’t think the suggestion that ehx tubes are not made to a high standard is a fair one.
try some tung-sol you might be suprised.

I’m afraid I can’t see things ever going back to the way they were, where the quality of something was the top priority…..most people just aren’t prepared to pay for it.
Buy cheap, dispose…..unfortunatly it’s the way the world is and I can’t see that changing in the near future, it will probably get worse if anything.

sad, but true mr melx. it is one of the reasons bias was introduced to amps as valves became more and more inconsistent and the amp had to be tuned to them.

I have a collection of vintage tube amps. Most of them have been re-tubed by Electro Harmonix EL34’s, EL84’s and some 6L6’s and of course, pre-amp tubes. I have to tell you that these are great tubes. I haven’t had any of these amps re-tubed since 2002. That’s 6 years…. Not all of them have been used religiously, but they have had some serious burn in time. They still sound great.
What are your experiences with Electro Harmonix tubes?
Well I’m personally sick and tired of hearing that EH/Sovtek tubes aren’t good enough for amps. I have sovteks in my twin reverb and they rock, I couldn’t imagine a better sounding amp personally.

The tubes coming out of Europe have been the best yet. It’s all about the set up of your amp the bias trim. Once you are dialed in, you can floor it to the max.
Have a great day!
