Having a weird squealing/oscillating issue with my brand new Silencer. Just hooked it up for the first time, using it in the 4-Cable method, so:

Guitar > INPUT, SEND > Amp input, Amp FX send > RETURN, OUTPUT > Amp FX return.

Tried it with and without pedals, and the gating works fine, but if I go beyond a certain amount of gain/treble on my amp (or boost with pedals, it starts to oscillate. The gate closes on the oscillation, but leaves some sound still present. Any sustained notes slowly get overtaken by this oscillation (not feedback, I’m playing quite quietly).

Amp is a Mesa Mark V combo, tried different guitars, different power (battery/power supplies). Nothing helps. the oscillation is worst with my HM-2 running (which is what I got the silencer for.

Any ideas? Should I exchange for a new one?

Can you tell us what other pedals you have in your signal chain? For example, you mention there’s an HM-2 in the chain but it’s not in your guitar to amp chain. Where is the HM-2 in your signal chain? What other pedals are in the signal chain?

Well the issue occurs with the chain as stated, if the amp gain is turned up enough. The HM-2 is right after the SEND.
    So chain with HM-2 is:

Guitar > INPUT, SEND > HM-2 > Amp Input, Amp FX send > RETURN, OUTPUT > Amp FX return.

I just want this combo working, but I can’t get it to work.

Is the Silencer the only pedal in your amp’s FX loop?

On the Silencer, where do you have the REDUCTION and RELEASE knobs set?

Silencer is the only pedal in the loop, yes. The noise occurs even when the Silencer is disengaged. Knobs are Reduction on full, Release at 9b o clock. but the noise occurs with them on any position.

It’s hard to say if the problem is a bad Silencer or if the gain is so high in your setup that the Return signal is coupling back to the input signal at the INPUT jack, creating positive feedback.

One test you can try doing is to only put the HM-2 in the Silencer’s Send/Return loop. Does this gating work well enough to both mute the HM-2 and quiet your amp’s preamp?

If not, then most likely the Silencer is defective and should be repaired. Contact info@ehx.com if a repair needs to be set up.
