Any info/clips on this old one?
December 29, 2008 at 12:11 am #89773The EH ManModeratorPretty much the same as the old Black Finger. The schematic I have for it IS exactly the same as the Black Finger.
December 29, 2008 at 9:50 pm #89794Ned FlandersModeratorI have the schem of the low frequency compressor and I may even have the black finger schem, I’m not sure but I didn’t even think to compare them.
Thanks EH man!January 7, 2009 at 9:05 pm #90286xgmanMemberI had one of these back in the early 70’s. It produced a really nice warm sort of rolling compressed sustain for bass guitars. How could it be the same schematics as the blackfinger? The black finger has several more buttons. I sure wish you EHx would remake these.
Here someone posted a schematic of it apparently:

The original (non-valve) Black Finger only had 3 knobs…and yeah, it would make a perfect xo reissue.
March 25, 2009 at 6:06 pm #94885danieldangerParticipanti just got one of these in the mail, the old black ink on silver late 60s style. i dont have much info, but if anyone needs some inner photos or whatnot, lemme know.
which it had the original knobs though, these ones all point in random directions.

My impression of this pedal is that it sustains beautifully, and the tone control has a huge range that is very useful.
However, with my unit, I get a faint bit of harmonic distortion when playing certain clean chords. It is less audible when using low output single coils, and very audible when using humbuckers. I don’t hear it when playing lead lines, just on certain chords like an open G major.
Being that this unit is over 30 years old, and one of the first stompbox compressors made, it wouldn’t surprise me if this was just a limitation of the design; but I’d like to know if anyone else has this issue with their unit just to be sure mine doesn’t need some tweaking.
I’ll post a soundclip later for comparison.

With the Deagan Electravibe the output of the instrument is so enormous, especially with initial impact of the mallet(s) on the key(s), that the humbucker effect you describe is amplified considerably but in a very pleasing way, at least for me. (The Black Finger features on the YouTube “Wagram Jam” link below).
If I remember correctly the Black Finger was originally developed on the basis of Carlos Santana’s characteristic guitar style, therefore the pedal does work best with solo lead lines. Personally, for compression on clear guitar chords I tend to use the Soul Preacher unit integrated in the vintage Deluxe Big Muff.
….and I look forward to your Black Finger sound bites! -
