Hey guys! I’m new to the forums, and the proud recent owner of my first EHX effect, a Cathedral stereo reverb. I’ve been very pleased with it, but there’s just one problem I can’t seem to fix. When I engage the pedal, I get a noticeable volume drop.

First, some info on how my chain is set up. I have two chains, one from my guitar to my amp, and another for the FX loop.

    Guitar > tuner > wah > overdrive > phaser > noise gate > amp

FX loop: 10 band EQ > Cathedral > stereo out to amps FX loops (two amps)

Everything is wonderful except for the drop in volume when I engage the Cathedral. So far I’ve tried:

    – Cathedral in the normal chain instead of the FX loop
    – Running mono (on the specified mono input and output)
    – Noise gate on/off
    – FX loop at + and – decibel settings on amps’ rear panels
    – FX loop mix turned up/down on both amps
    – Every setting on the Cathedral in every mode turned up/down (wet/dry mix, damping, etc.)
    – EQ on and off, and taken out of the chain completely (leaving the Cathedral as the only effect in the loop)
    – Two different power supplies
    – Different cables
    – Less/more gain/volume/master on the amps

No matter what I tried, I always got a noticeable drop in volume when the Cathedral was engaged in any mode, and volume would immediately come back up when I switched it off. The effect itself still sounds great aside from that. The main issue I run into is that when I switch it back off, suddenly my amp is roaring loud again and it really ruins the flow of a song.

Any troubleshooting suggestions I may have missed? Is this a common problem? I’ve never had volume drop off with any of my other pedals, so this is my first time trying to troubleshoot the issue.

Can you tell where you have the knobs set on the Cathedral?

I can’t speak for the other guy, but I’ve adjusted every knob on every effect, it was one of the first things I tried. I’d tell you where they were but I adjust them daily and my presets are all different, but the volume drop is consistent throughout.

The past couple months I’ve found a bit of a workaround in that my MXR KFK 10 band EQ has dual outputs, and if I run both into the Cathedral and go mono out it seems to boost it up. However, if I run stereo outputs on the Cathedral the volume drop returns, as well as mono in and mono out (I’m using the correct mono input/output sockets as per the instruction manual and labels, though I’ve tried the others as well).

The volume drop is also there when I just run the Cathedral by itself between my guitar and amp. I thought perhaps my other effects weren’t playing nice with it, but the problem remains the same. I’m also using the included power adapter that came with the Cathedral, so I don’t believe it’s a power problem. I’ve tried Boss adapters and daisy chaining it as well, and didn’t notice any change.

I’m running low on ideas :D Still love the pedal though.

I’ve also tried every knob setting but the volumedrop stays the same!

Another quick question for both you: is there a volume drop when the BLEND knob is set fully counter-clockwise, so that all you would hear is the DRY signal?

    Hey Flick,

I just tested it on multiple channels and the volume drop was consistent whether the blend knob was fully dry or wet.

    We’ll check this out today.

We tried a couple of Cathedral’s and did not experience the volume from bypass to effect mode as you both described. There are certainly reverb sounds that you could create on the Cathedral that are lower in volume than the bypassed signal but if the BLEND knob is set fully counter-clockwise for 100%, the volume should not change between bypass and effect modes. It sounds like both of your units may have be malfunctioning. You can send it in for repair.

Thanks Flick, how should I go about sending it in?

Oh yeah, good question. Email info@ehx.com or call (718) 937-8300 and ask for customer service. They will help you out.
