EH-8000 Guitar Synthesizer – Vintage Rack
here is a picture, not by me
http://www.sequencer.de/pix/electroharmonix/electro_harmonix_g_synthesi.jpgi have regularly looked for one of these for 5-6 years
i want one next to my vocoder!
no sign!
RUMOUR has it that they didn’t track well or even sound too hot (to be fair neither did many of their counterparts from other companies; Arp, Roland, Korg, Casio included)
You can find the schematics on the net quite easily
But try and buy one, or even find a mention of anyone who has got one, even more than 3 photos i have ever seen online…
The only old bbs posts that I ever read weren’t exactly full of praise for it, but *I* want to make it sing againI reckon somebody here should sell theirs to me, so please let me know the price!
I read the EH-8000 is now reissued and it’s called a Q-tron, and there is also the HOG mentioned in reference to this old vintage rack, but any more info about the old beast would be appreciated
EH, what a wicked company
that talking pedal just went on ebay for $480 I think it was, by the way
Rave on!
June 6, 2009 at 1:45 pm #97440nightravenMemberthe qtron is a simulation of the old mutron envelope filter. it’s not the same as this. the HOG is a totally new pedal and is digital but it might bear some resemblance to this old rackmount box, dunno what this thing does though.
but that thing looks very nice – i can see it being insanely expensive as well…June 6, 2009 at 1:47 pm #97441The EH ManModeratorI have one that I purchased from Mike Matthews himself back in the early 90’s. I have all of EH’s rack-mount units w/ the exception of the 64 Second Digital Delay.
It’s not for sale.
June 6, 2009 at 1:55 pm #97443EH-8000MemberAny chance of some photos or samples?
What do you think it’s worth? I guess, judging by other vintage gear, the original list price, I think that was $1200 plus?
Any more info at all?, I’ve noted more or less everything I ever discovered in the post above!
Cheers
PS What are *all* the EH rack units please?
Can you tell us any other bits of EH gear you would rate up there, as part of this freaky setup: Talking Pedal, Mini Synthesizer (cardboard backed one), Vocoder, Golden Throat.
There’s some kind of phaser badly needed in there, sure, and a 16-second delay? and…August 5, 2010 at 2:59 pm #110717julianModeratorRon, you really need to get a digital camera and do some video demonstrations of some of your stuff on youtube. It’s super easy to do, and it’s nice to clear some of the mystery around it.
October 8, 2010 at 5:17 pm #111862StephengilesMemberI tried the first unit sent over to England at EH UK. It tracked very well indeed. All parts are still available with the exception perhaps of the 2 TL601 IC switches, but I’m sure there is a workaround.
September 5, 2013 at 1:57 am #119340snarkleMemberI came across this discussion while researching my EH-8000, which i purchased many years ago from the guitarist in the Vancouver noise band Tunnel Canary. Although I don’t think i want to sell this unit, I do think I’d like to get it up and running again, as it made quite a wonderful racket and I’m getting back into analog synthesis after a 20-year absence.
Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of schematics and/or a tech who’d be willing to take this on?
September 5, 2013 at 8:52 am #119341StephengilesMemberI have the schematics but am currently on holiday in the Spanish sun! I’ll send you scans when I return home next week.
September 5, 2013 at 2:52 pm #119342snarkleMemberVery cool!
Thanks in advance, and enjoy your holiday!
My neighbourhood tech will probably be able to take care of it if he has the schematics; after all, he did a great job on my Casio PG-380.
It’s going to be synth-guitar madness around here…
November 21, 2013 at 10:49 pm #119509foxyguitarsMemberI had one of those about 10 years ago, I regret letting it go, it was pretty amazing !

May 30, 2014 at 12:41 am #120008JeffCMemberThe EHX guitar synthesizer is the coolest thing by far that I have ever plugged my guitar into. It really should be revisited with the added capability of 8-12 presets and the benefit of the last 30+ years of better understanding tracking capabilities.
I’m really surprised that over the years I haven’t heard more discussions or audio snippets. Here‘s an old 1985 cassette I converted today that hints at the majestic (and yes, glitchy if you weren’t playing a strong single note phrase) places it could go. Without presets, I never felt comfortable enough to try using it live for the tuned voices’ patches I’d come up with, but it was an amazing sound.
By the way, does Julia or any of the present-day owners of one of these know the size socket needed to undo the 4 main sockets that hold the faceplate on? 1/2″ is too big and 3/8″ seems too small. Is there a chance that it is 7/16″ or in millimeters? I have to clean up a contact or two as it’s been laying dormant for 25 years. -Thanks in advance.

JohnHello John,
I’m not sure I can afford one of these, but if you’re willing to satisfy my curiosity, feel free to shoot me some details through private message.
Thanks,

If your EH 8000 is still available, I’m interested.
