hello all, i got 3 brand new in the box 8″ speakers “Electro Harmonix brand with face logo on them. they are 15 watt at 4 ohms.
i have had these for months now and i don’t know what to do with them, i was thinking of putting them each in there own little cabs for maybe use with small amps (like the 22 caliber). but i looked all over Ebay for months and couldn’t find anything i liked, let alone i couldn’t find much for single 8″ speakers unless they were those ugly grey carpet ones made for trucks or cars.
i was thinking of making them into 3 separate practice combos, but i cant find good schematics/wiring diagrams.
anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do with these or and good schematics? i would like to build clones of EH combos if possible. if not EH clones then a very small, low watt tube amp.
and speaker wattage and im is one thing im not to familiar with (even tho i build my own guitars, and a couple pedals) can these handle more wattage if there wired together? and what would the ohms become?

the ohms question could get a bit messy with 3 speakers, with 2 speakers you could wire them for a total of 8 ohms or 2 ohms depending on if they are wired series or parallel.
have a read of this
http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/2x12wiring.html
it explains all the options for wiring a 2 speaker cab.
if it were me, it’d make a 30w 2×8″ combo and a little 15w 8″ cab to run a 22-cabiber or something into.
October 20, 2009 at 12:30 pm #102445Mr.GrimMemberthanks for the info and suggestions Electro-melx. i think i will make a 30w 2×8 combo, but does anyone have a good schematic/wiring diagram for a tube one? and does anyone have the info to turn my last one into a small EH combo clone? like a freedom or a mike dirt road?
October 20, 2009 at 1:57 pm #102447Mr.GrimMemberoh duh!…looks like ill be headin over to http://www.ronsound.com agean for the schimatics. i just need to look up the amp specs first to know what ones i need to buy! (Ron dont list the specs)
October 20, 2009 at 7:46 pm #102465Fender&EHX4everModerator8″ 4ohm speakers are used for vintage Fender Champs and Vibro Champs. I’d find one on eBay without a speaker. My Vibro Champ is an amazing little amp.
Melx’ idea is also excellent.
October 20, 2009 at 8:02 pm #102466Mr.GrimMemberyeah i thought of buying a amp with no speaker or a blown one, like those. but when i looked on ebay i actually couldn’t find any and i would rather have sum thing a little more original and it would give me another project to work on. im almost done with my current one. (a 70’s tele deluxe type copy, but made for metal)
October 21, 2009 at 6:59 am #102471Ned FlandersModeratorIf you wire them together dont wire them in parallel, you’l want to wire them in series or the Ohms will be so low it will blow any amp you run thru them.
Just two of them speakers in parallel is 2 Ohms which is too low and unuseable for guitar amps, most guitar amps run between 4 ohms and 16 ohms. but if you wire them in series two of them is 8 ohms and actually useable! Also the wattage of the amp running thru the speakers shjould be half the total speaker wattage. So if each speaker is 15watts,that is 30 watts at 8 ohms total (inseries) , you’l want your amp (the head) to be 15 watts with an output impedence of 8 ohms.
Research guitar speaker ohms and series/parallel wiring before you go building anything/hooking it up etc.
October 21, 2009 at 5:22 pm #102496Mr.GrimMemberthanks for the info Liberty Belle. like i sed i have the capablity, i have built guitars and effecxts, and small amps, but surprisingly never wired my own speakers, so i wasent sure of that.
now all i still need is schimatics/wireing diagrams for a 15-20 watt tube amp to build a 2×8 combo!
can anyone please help? my current project is allmost done, and thats the second guitar in a row, im excited to build another amp next!
October 22, 2009 at 10:18 am #102519Ned FlandersModeratorhave you tried the Freeinfosociety? Google Image Search?
October 22, 2009 at 6:36 pm #102538Mr.GrimMemberthanks, i did the first one but wasn’t happy with what they had, i can do this but i wanted a schematic and a wiring diagram, its a lot easier that way and most sites only list a schematic only.
i was searching google but found nothing there as well, but thanks for suggesting to search google picks! i found something that will work!
i have decided to build a Fender tweed deluxe clone!
now i just need to go back and look within this post to see if theres info on being able to hook up all 3 – 8″ 15w speakers in one combo, that would be original. but i dont evan know the differance between series and parilel.
October 22, 2009 at 8:56 pm #102546Ned FlandersModeratorI would just use two speakers and keep one for something else/spare cause all three will be 45 watts at 24 ohms, not really ideal for a guitar amplifier.
After I just saw your other thread I posted a warnign and I will now post it here too:
No offense but if you need a wiring diagram and cant work from a schematic I wouldnt be fucking around with 110/240volts to tell you the truth! It can kill you easy!Maybe start with something under 24 volts to begin with!!!!
October 23, 2009 at 3:17 am #102560Mr.GrimMemberi just like to have a wiring diagram as well so i have a better idea as to the best placement for the components, and if its a clone i like to have it look as original as possible.
no offense taken, wise advise.
October 23, 2009 at 3:24 am #102561Mr.GrimMemberand thank you electro-melx i honestly just got around to looking at that link about wiring speakers together. very helpful! i now know the info i needed.
