Effectology episode #23 “The Ravish Sitar” By Bill Ruppert

Below are the settings used in the Effectology Ravish Sitar video.

The opening drone was done with two tracks of Ravish in drone mode.
I looped one of the tracks and changed pitch with a SMM/H delay to create a huge chord.

Only three pedals were used in this video.
A Ravish Sitar, Stereo Memory Man delay and Cathedral Reverb.

A expression pitch pedal was used to bend notes.
Bends on a sitar by pushing down on the string.

I like it. Every time an EHX pedal comes out I judge it by the sounds you can get out of it.

“NAMM floor show video? Man I can’t wait for the Effectology to show us what this thing can really do!”

I can imagine the possibilities when thrown in with my other EH weird boxes.

A couple of weeks ago, my first thought was ‘what use do I have for a sitar simulator?’

Now, after Effectology, it’s ‘where’s my wallet?’

    Thanks Bill. Amazing demo.

for yrs i have either tried or heard many or most of the socalled sitar emulation boxes available, none have proved to be useful or even life like. (WOW) now all has changed with the release of the ravish sitar, i couldnt believe my ears when i heard the ravish and still now when i play the video with mike matthews i remain in a ravishing state of mind woooo hoooo.. leave it to ehx to get it right and create a box that finally emulates a sitar and is life like–2 thumbs up to mike matthews ehx & the engineering team- thanks a bunch..

ps: i have preordered my ravish and cant wait to receive it

Some questions about the Ravish Sitar pedal with respect to the features requiring use of the “optional expression pedal”. Is this a proprietary expression pedal to be sold by electro-harmonix or will any outboard expression pedal work? If the latter, I have a Vox Tonelab SE which has two expression pedals build into it. Would I be able to use the Ravish in conjunction with the Vox Tonelab SE – and in particular, in conjunction with the Vox Tonelab SE’s exoression pedals? Thanks.

All the EHX pedals I’ve had that have had expression work with your standard generic 10kohm expression pedal or a 0-5v CV signal.

EHX doesn’t make an expression pedal, and in fact the HOG comes pre-packaged with an M-Audio.

I would suspect that this works similarly.

Looking at the Vox Tonelab SE it doesn’t have a 1/4″ stereo expression out. So I suspect those pedals only work via Midi.

And I don’t see a midi input on the Ravish, so I think you’d have to have a midi-analog converter box in between them.

Bill, what’s the range on the pitch whammy settings? Can you do down octaves as well? Could you do -1 to +1 in the same sweep?

Is there a way to get the koto sound with other pedals?

    Yes!
Julian is right, the Boss and M-audio expression pedals works great.
Korg expression pedals on the other hand will not work.
The Vox you have will not work.

Thanks, Julian & Bill. So, it looks like I’ll be placing an order both for a Ravish and for an M-Audio expression pedal. Oh, one other question (which may result in that being an order for two M-Audio expression pedals) – can one hook up two expression pedals to the Ravish simultaneously, one to the Ravish’s “EXP drone” jack and the other to the Ravish’s “EXP Pitch” jack, so you don’t have to unplug/replug when going from one of the Ravish’s EXP functions (drone volume) to the other (lead pitch blend)? Thanks again.

The range is root to one octave above.
    I will not go down.
You program it in steps. 1 through 12.(actually 12 is notated on the pedal as 0)

Louis yes the HOG and Ring Thing can kind of do that with the pitch pedal. BUT the Ravish has the sympathetic notes ringing in the back as you play.
    NOTHING else will do THAT!
    NOTHING

My favorite of all is the Boss FV-500L
    Its built like a tank.
    The M-audio is plastic….
BUT if your budget is tight the M-audio will work just fine!

Bill, just to clarify before I order, so a two expression pedal setup will indeed work with the Ravish…? Thanks again!
